How many primary schools operate in Doha

Around 45 international schools in Doha offer a full primary phase, taking children from FS2 or Kindergarten through to Year 6 or Grade 5. The Ministry of Education and Higher Education licenses each, and most also hold accreditation from at least one external body such as BSO for the British schools, CIS for the IB cluster or MSA for the American pattern.

The split by curriculum favours the British system. About 22 of the 45 deliver English National Curriculum or Cambridge Primary, simply because Doha's expatriate flow is dominated by UK, Australian and South African families. Eight schools run the IB Primary Years Programme, including the Education City flagships. Five deliver the US elementary pathway, anchored by the American School of Doha. The remainder splits between Indian primaries operating CBSE or ICSE, the Lycee Bonaparte French primaire, and one or two Lebanese and Egyptian community settings.

Capacity is reasonable for a city of two million. Waiting lists exist at the tier 1 schools, particularly for Year 1 and Year 3 entry, but mid-tier British and IB schools usually have movement available year-round. The Indian-curriculum primaries have the longest queues because they serve the largest single expatriate community in Qatar.

Fees and the Doha primary tiers

Primary fees in Doha fall into three rough bands. The premium tier, running from about USD 23,000 to USD 29,800 per year for Year 6, captures the American School of Doha, Doha College and Qatar Academy. The mid tier sits at USD 14,000 to USD 22,000 and includes Park House, Compass International, Sherborne Qatar, ACS Doha and Newton British Academy. The value tier, USD 8,300 to USD 13,000, is dominated by Indian-curriculum primaries that deliver a credible international primary phase at a fraction of the British and American cost.

Headline tuition is only part of the picture. Most expat families on relocation packages have schooling paid by the employer, often capped at a specific QAR or USD ceiling. Registration, transport, uniforms and capital fees can add another 10 to 18 percent on top of the published tuition. Illustrative example primaries

The schools below are illustrative, not a ranking. Each holds a current Ministry of Education licence, has been operating in Doha for at least ten years, and runs a settled primary phase with reliable Year 6 outcomes.

Doha College Primary, in Al Waab, is the largest British curriculum primary in Qatar. Operating since 1980 and inspected favourably by BSO, it has a long track record of moving Year 6 cohorts into its own senior school and into Doha College Sixth Form.

American School of Doha, in Al Khaisa, runs a US accredited elementary programme alongside its middle and high school. The Kindergarten to Grade 5 phase is the largest single American elementary cohort in the country.

Qatar Academy Doha Primary, in Education City, is the IB PYP flagship in Qatar, founded by Her Highness Sheikha Moza in 1996. It feeds an unusually high proportion of its Year 6 cohort into its own MYP and Diploma stream.

Park House English School Primary, in Al Tarfa, is the strong mid-tier British primary, particularly popular with families on Shell, ExxonMobil and QatarEnergy packages.

Where primary families live in Doha

Al Waab and Aspire Zone, the long-standing British family quarter, because Doha College, Park House and Newton British Academy sit nearby. Education City and the surrounding Al Rayyan municipality, for the IB pipeline through Qatar Academy. West Bay and the diplomatic district, for short commutes to ACS Doha and easy access to the corporate towers. The Pearl and Lusail, popular with newer European and East Asian arrivals attracted by the marina lifestyle. Al Khaisa and the northern suburbs, the catchment for the American School of Doha. Admissions calendar

Applications for the September 2026 academic year opened at most Doha primaries between October and December 2025. The tier 1 schools, Doha College, ASD and Qatar Academy, close their main intake for Year 1 and Year 3 by late January, with assessments running through February. Offers land between March and April, with deposit deadlines typically two weeks after the offer letter.

Mid-tier British and IB primaries accept rolling applications throughout the year, subject to capacity. Movement is most common between November and February when corporate rotations to Qatar concentrate. Families relocating mid-year should plan on a four to six week lead time from application to a confirmed place, longer if a sibling priority is being claimed. Our secondary schools hub covers the next stage after Year 6, and the nursery hub covers the FS1 stage that precedes it.
