The 74 British schools in Dubai
Dubai operates 74 schools delivering the British National Curriculum, taking pupils through Foundation Stage, IGCSE at age 16 and A Levels at 18.
The market splits into three groups. Roughly 12 selective independents form the academic top tier, modelled on UK independent schools and often part of partnerships with their UK parents (Brighton College, Repton, Dubai College). A middle band of 25 to 30 GEMS, Taaleem and standalone campuses delivers the same curriculum at lower fees with larger class sizes. The remainder is a long tail of smaller community schools, some primary only, serving specific neighbourhoods.
Inspection results from KHDA are publicly available and updated annually. Twenty British schools currently hold an Outstanding rating, the highest count of any curriculum in the city. That density means parents have unusually strong choice within the curriculum, though waiting lists at the most-requested year groups still run 12 to 18 months.
Fee tiers and what they buy
The British market in Dubai has a wider fee spread than IB or American provision. The cheapest British schools, including some of the older GEMS Modern Academy and Star International sites, run $8,400 to $11,000 in secondary tuition. The mid band, where most expat families land, runs $13,000 to $19,000. The selective independents, with smaller cohorts, dedicated facilities and stronger university destination records, run $20,000 to $28,500.
The cost difference buys three things at the top end. First, class size: under 20 in the selectives, often 28 to 30 in the value tier. Second, faculty stability: the independents have lower teacher turnover, supported by housing allowances. Third, sixth form options: more A Level subjects and stronger UCAS support.

Illustrative example schools
The schools below illustrate the breadth of British provision in Dubai. They are not ranked. Each has an Outstanding KHDA rating and a clear identity in the market.
Dubai College in Al Sufouh is the city's most selective British school. Entry is competitive at 11 plus, A Level outcomes are exceptional and Russell Group placement runs at 60 percent of leavers in recent cohorts.
Jumeirah College in Al Safa is the legacy GEMS British secondary, with a 50 year heritage and a culture closer to a UK grammar school. Smaller and more traditional than the newer flagships.
Brighton College Dubai in Al Barsha South pairs strong academic outcomes with one of the city's best SEN programmes, the Bridge unit. A good fit for families with mixed academic profiles.
Repton Dubai in Nad Al Sheba runs senior school British curriculum alongside an IB Diploma option, useful where one child wants IB and another wants A Level.
Best neighbourhoods for British families
British families in Dubai cluster around three broad zones. Jumeirah, Al Safa and Umm Suqeim for the older established schools, closest to the coast and the most expensive housing. Arabian Ranches, The Springs and The Meadows for the JESS Arabian Ranches catchment and family-village living, with quick school-bus access to most options. Al Barsha, Dubai Hills Estate and Mirdif for the central GEMS and Brighton College catchments, with the strongest housing inventory at family-friendly prices.
Newer British families increasingly settle in Sobha Hartland and MBR City, where North London Collegiate School Dubai and Hartland International draw catchment demand. Commute time to school remains a real factor; Dubai's morning traffic can turn a 12 kilometre journey into 45 minutes.
Admissions calendar
Most Dubai British schools open applications for the following September in October. Selective schools close their main intake for Year 7 and Year 12 by January and run assessments in February. Non-selective schools accept rolling applications. Mid-year transfers happen most often in January and April, after end-of-term moves elsewhere. If you are relocating to Dubai with a fixed start date, apply at least 6 months before, and budget 9 to 12 months for the top selectives.
