How many British schools in Hong Kong
Hong Kong has around 22 schools delivering the English National Curriculum through IGCSE at age 16 and A Level at 18 in the 2025 to 2026 academic year. The market is unusual by Asian standards because Hong Kong sits at the seam between the English Schools Foundation (ESF) network, founded in 1967 to serve English-medium families, and a separate band of independent British brands that opened campuses in the territory after 2010.
The cluster splits into three groups. Roughly five flagship independents, the Harrow, Kellett, Shrewsbury, Nord Anglia and Malvern College Pre-School and Kindergarten sites, form the academic top tier with selective intakes and dedicated A Level provision. ESF runs two through schools at the senior end (South Island School and West Island School) that offer A Level alongside the IB Diploma. The remainder is a long tail of smaller standalone British primary and pre-prep sites including the Sai Kun, Stanley and Discovery Bay community schools.

Fee tiers and debentures
British curriculum tuition in Hong Kong runs three rough tiers. The value tier, HK$150,000 to HK$185,000, covers the ESF A Level streams at South Island School and West Island School and the smaller community campuses. The mid tier, HK$185,000 to HK$230,000, covers most of Kellett School, Nord Anglia and the all through campuses. The premium tier, HK$240,000 to HK$280,000, sits at Harrow International School Hong Kong, Shrewsbury Hong Kong (primary only currently) and the Malvern College early years sites.
Hong Kong is unusual in that headline tuition is only part of the cost. Debentures or capital levies at the independent British schools materially shape entry. Harrow Hong Kong requires a refundable individual debenture of around HK$500,000, with corporate options up to HK$3 million. Kellett operates a smaller capital levy of around HK$36,000 a year. ESF schools charge a one-off refundable capital fee of HK$38,000 at entry. Where British families live
British families in Hong Kong cluster around four broad zones. Mid-Levels, Pok Fu Lam and Sai Ying Pun sit closest to Kellett Pok Fu Lam and the ESF South Island and West Island catchments, and they remain the default expat zones for Island families. Tuen Mun and Gold Coast in the New Territories serve the Harrow Hong Kong day intake, where many families take school transport rather than commute themselves.
Discovery Bay on Lantau Island serves Discovery College and the British primary community there, with a small ferry premium on rentals but markedly more space than Mid-Levels. Tseung Kwan O, Sai Kung and Clear Water Bay in Kowloon East serve the Shrewsbury Hong Kong, Nord Anglia and Hong Kong Academy catchments and have become a quiet British strongholds since 2018. Rental premiums at the most sought after British catchments run 15 to 25 percent over comparable Hong Kong zones. The moving to Hong Kong with kids guide covers school catchment timing.

Mid year transfers happen most often in January and April, after end of term moves elsewhere.
