How many American schools in Jakarta
Greater Jakarta has roughly six schools running an American curriculum pathway through to the US high school diploma. The market is dominated by Jakarta Intercultural School in Cilandak, founded in 1951 and accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. A second tier of schools offers an American programme alongside another curriculum, such as the IB Diploma at Sekolah Ciputra or the British curriculum at North Jakarta Intercultural School, with Advanced Placement courses available at the senior years.
Three schools provide the full pre-K to Grade 12 American programme. The remainder cap at Grade 8 or Grade 10 and ask senior students to migrate to Jakarta Intercultural School, an IB Diploma programme or to US boarding. Of those offering Advanced Placement, the typical roster covers AP Calculus, AP US History, AP Biology, AP Chemistry, AP English Literature and AP World History. Larger schools add AP Computer Science, AP Economics, AP Psychology and AP Spanish to the rotation.
The Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture licenses every international school as a Satuan Pendidikan Kerjasama, which requires Bahasa Indonesia, Pancasila and Indonesian religious instruction to be taught alongside the foreign curriculum. American schools in Jakarta weave these into the social studies framework and the local studies elective slots. For more curriculum context across the city see our IB hub and our British curriculum hub.
Fees and the American tiers
American school fees in Jakarta are grouped into three rough tiers, denominated in US dollars. The value tier, USD 12,000 to USD 16,000 a year, captures bilingual schools running an American framework with Indonesian instruction at primary. The mid tier, USD 16,000 to USD 22,000, covers ACG School Jakarta and Sekolah Pelita Harapan campuses offering AP courses. The premium tier, USD 22,000 to USD 36,000, is Jakarta Intercultural School, which sits at the top of the Jakarta market on both fees and outcomes.
Total cost is meaningfully higher than headline tuition because Advanced Placement exam fees, capital levies, athletic team fees and US-style trips all add up over the senior years. Expect 20 to 25 percent loading on top of published tuition by Grade 12. Our Jakarta fees guide walks through the loading mathematics. Our fees comparison tool shows tuition by year group across cities.

Illustrative example schools
The five schools below are illustrative, not a ranking. Each delivers a credible American curriculum pathway and serves a meaningful expatriate or US-bound Indonesian cohort.
Jakarta Intercultural School in Cilandak is the legacy international school of the city, founded in 1951. It is the only Jakarta school running a full Pre-K to Grade 12 American programme accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Strong Advanced Placement results and a long pipeline into top US universities. JIS also offers the IB Diploma alongside the US diploma at the senior years.
Sekolah Ciputra Jakarta in Citra Garden delivers an integrated American and IB Diploma programme. Indonesian-owned, English-medium and IB authorised since 2003. Smaller cohorts than Jakarta Intercultural School and a stronger Indonesian student body.
ACG School Jakarta in Kemang runs the IB programme with Advanced Placement supplementation at the senior years. Part of the ACG group based in Auckland. Smaller and more international than the legacy schools, with a strong Australian and New Zealand expatriate community.
Sekolah Pelita Harapan Sentul City delivers an integrated American and IB Diploma programme on a hilltop campus south of Jakarta. Christian foundation, strong music and arts programme, with results that compete with the international schools despite a predominantly Indonesian student body.
Where American families live
American expat families in Jakarta cluster around four zones. Pondok Indah, the historic American villa belt in South Jakarta, walking distance from Jakarta Intercultural School and home to most US embassy and corporate families. Pondok Indah Mall and the surrounding cafe scene anchor expat life here. Cilandak, immediately south of Pondok Indah, for villa rentals within bus reach of Jakarta Intercultural School at lower cost than Pondok Indah itself. Kemang for the more bohemian scene, with families using ACG School Jakarta or Jakarta Intercultural School. Senayan and Sudirman for the apartment-dwelling expat slice who use school transport into Cilandak.
Traffic between Pondok Indah and central Jakarta is bad but the school bus network is well-organised, with most routes covering Pondok Indah, Cilandak, Kemang, Senayan and Pondok Labu. Bus rides typically take 30 to 50 minutes one way, depending on traffic and pickup order. Our cost calculator bundles transport, fees and housing into a single total relocation budget.
