How many British schools in Jakarta
Greater Jakarta hosts roughly nine schools delivering the full English National Curriculum, leading to IGCSE at Year 11 and A Level at Year 13. The list is anchored by British School Jakarta in Bintaro, the only Council of British International Schools full member in the city, alongside a tail of smaller bilingual British curriculum providers across Kelapa Gading, Pantai Indah Kapuk and the BSD City corridor. The cluster has grown slowly compared with the IB and American curriculum cohorts, partly because the British expatriate population in Jakarta is smaller than the American or Australian community.
Of those nine schools, five offer A Level through to Year 13. The remainder cap at IGCSE and ask senior school students to migrate to an A Level college, an IB Diploma school or to UK boarding. Three schools also offer the IB Diploma alongside A Level at sixth form, a hybrid model that gives families flexibility between the two pathways. The Australian Independent School in Pejaten runs the British curriculum at primary and transitions to the Australian curriculum or HSC for senior years.
The Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture licenses every international school as a Satuan Pendidikan Kerjasama, which requires Bahasa Indonesia, Pancasila and Indonesian religious instruction to be taught alongside the British curriculum. British schools in Jakarta weave these into the Personal, Social and Health Education timetable and into local studies elective slots. Fees and the British tiers
British school fees in Jakarta are grouped into three rough tiers, denominated in US dollars. The value tier, USD 10,000 to USD 14,000 a year, captures bilingual Indonesian-British schools targeting aspirational local families with English-medium delivery. The mid tier, USD 14,000 to USD 20,000, covers schools such as North Jakarta Intercultural School, High Scope Indonesia and Sekolah Bina Bangsa. The premium tier, USD 20,000 to USD 28,000, is British School Jakarta, which sits at the top of the market on both fees and outcomes.
Total cost is meaningfully higher than headline tuition because IGCSE and A Level examination fees, capital levies, transport and trips all add up over the senior years. Expect 25 to 30 percent loading on top of published tuition by Year 13. Our Jakarta fees guide walks through the loading mathematics. Our fees comparison tool shows tuition by year group across cities.

Illustrative example schools

British School Jakarta in Bintaro is the largest and longest-established British curriculum school in Indonesia, founded in 1974. It runs IGCSE at Year 11 and offers both A Level and IB Diploma at sixth form. Council of British International Schools full member, with extensive sports, music and outdoor education facilities on a Bintaro Jaya campus.
North Jakarta Intercultural School in Kelapa Gading delivers the English National Curriculum and IGCSE for the North Jakarta expat community, which centres on Pluit and Kelapa Gading. Smaller than British School Jakarta and more accessible for families in the northern industrial belt.

Where British families live
British expat families in Jakarta cluster around four zones. Bintaro Jaya, southwest of central Jakarta, for proximity to British School Jakarta, with planned suburban housing, walking streets and a strong British and Australian community. Pondok Indah and Cilandak for families who choose IGCSE provision but want to live in the southern villa belt, accepting a longer drive to Bintaro. Kemang for the more bohemian expat scene, although British families tend to skew here only when their children attend ACG or Jakarta Intercultural School. Pantai Indah Kapuk, a planned coastal city in the north, for families using Sekolah Bina Bangsa or other Cambridge providers and working in the northern industrial belt.
Traffic between Bintaro and central Jakarta dictates a lot of British family decision-making. The school-run from Pondok Indah to Bintaro can stretch to 75 minutes one way at peak. Most British School Jakarta families end up moving into Bintaro Jaya within their first 18 months. Our cost calculator bundles transport, fees and housing into a single total relocation budget.
Admissions calendar
The Jakarta academic year runs from late July to mid June. Applications for the August 2026 academic year opened across most Jakarta British schools from October 2025. Tier 1 schools such as British School Jakarta close their main intake for Year 7 and Year 12 by March, with assessments in April and offers in May. Mid-year transfers are accepted on a rolling basis subject to year group availability. The June 2026 round is unusually competitive for Year 4 to Year 9 transfers because demand has outstripped supply since 2023.
If you are committing to British School Jakarta, apply 9 to 12 months before your desired start. A Level transfers after October of the first year are difficult because the linear two-year programme depends on continuity of teacher and subject.
