The Kuwait City school landscape
The flagship is The American School of Kuwait (ASK), founded in 1964 and the heritage US-curriculum school for diplomatic and oil-sector families. The British School of Kuwait (BSK) is the BSO-accredited British flagship. American International School (AIS) and Kuwait English School (KES) serve the broader Anglophone market. Lycée Français de Koweït, Indian Educational School, and the Pakistan English School serve specific national communities.
Kuwait's school market is unusual in scale: with 70%+ of residents being expats, schools effectively operate at full capacity year-round. Most premium international schools offer corporate enrolment guarantees for KOC, KPC, banking and other sponsor families.
Considering Kuwait oil & gas relocation?
KOC, KPC, KGOC and other Kuwait state oil sponsors typically include premium school enrolment guarantees. Our guide covers eligibility and which schools accept sponsor letters.
Most popular neighbourhoods for families
Salwa, Bayan and Mishref are the heart of expat family Kuwait, home to ASK, BSK and Kuwait English. Hawalli is the central residential zone with multiple international schools. Salmiya appeals to younger expat families wanting coastal living. Ahmadi in the south is the heritage oil-sector compound with KOC families, hosting Kuwait National English School and others. Among these, Bayan is a quiet villa district near the Salwa schools; see our guide to Bayan international schools and family life. For coastal living near the schools, see our guide to living in Salmiya with international schools.
