The Manila early years landscape
Metro Manila has more than 30 international standard early years settings, covering children from 18 months through the end of Casa or reception at age 6. The market splits into four broad models. Play based and reception classes attached to the larger international schools such as International School Manila and British School Manila. Specialist Montessori providers including Operation Brotherhood Montessori Center. Reggio inspired settings, which are a smaller but growing niche centred on Bonifacio Global City. And bilingual early years, where Chinese International School Manila and the Lycee Francais de Manille run a parallel language model from kindergarten upward.
Demand has been strong since 2022 as the Manila expatriate population rebuilt and Filipino dual citizens returned home from North America. Waiting lists at the leading nursery settings are routine for the popular age groups, particularly the year before the British reception intake.
Manila early years settings are unusual in that almost none require children to be toilet trained on entry. Most accept children from 18 months in the toddler community model, and reception year usually starts the September a child turns 5.
The four early years models
The play based model dominates at the large British and American schools, where the foundation stage and pre kindergarten years emphasise discovery, free movement and adult facilitation rather than direct instruction. British School Manila runs the English Early Years Foundation Stage framework, with three to four year olds in nursery and four to five year olds in reception. International School Manila runs a similar US play based pre K and K1 sequence.
The Montessori model emphasises the prepared environment, the three hour work cycle and the mixed age classroom from ages 3 to 6. Authentic Montessori is the dominant alternative in the Manila early years and our Manila Montessori hub covers it in detail.
The Reggio Emilia inspired model is more recent in Manila but well established at smaller settings such as Lighthouse Christian Academy Reggio in Bonifacio and selected programmes at Reedley International. The IB Primary Years Programme early years strand sits across International School Manila, the Beacon Academy and Cebu Pacific in Manila, with the early years tied to the wider inquiry led continuum.

Fees and the realistic cost
Early years fees vary by model. Toddler community in a Montessori setting sits at around USD 3,500 to 5,500. Casa, the age 3 to 6 stage, runs from USD 4,500 to 8,000. Pre kindergarten at the play based international schools sits higher at USD 7,000 to 11,000. The British School Manila reception year and International School Manila K1 sit at the top of the band at USD 10,000 to 15,000, which is the same fee as year 1 because the foundation stage is treated as full primary by both schools.
On top of tuition, all settings charge a one off enrolment fee. At the leading schools this is USD 2,500 to 5,000, refundable in some cases. Bus services are USD 1,500 to 2,500 per year by route. Our Manila school fees guide walks through the all in figure including transport and capital fees.

Illustrative example settings
Three illustrative settings, not a ranking. Each represents one of the dominant early years models and is well known in the expatriate community.
International School Manila Early Years in Bonifacio Global City delivers a US style play based pre kindergarten and kindergarten sequence with the IB PYP as the curriculum frame. It is part of the largest international school continuum in the country, which gives families a natural pathway through primary, middle and the IB Diploma without changing schools.
British School Manila Foundation Stage, also in Bonifacio, runs the English Early Years Foundation Stage framework. Reception class sizes are capped at 22 with a qualified early years teacher and two teaching assistants, which is comparable to the strongest British nurseries in Singapore or Bangkok.
Operation Brotherhood Montessori Toddler Community in Greenhills is the largest authentic Montessori toddler community in the country and accepts children from 18 months. The setting is staffed by AMI trained guides and offers full and half day options.
Admissions and where families live
Manila early years admissions are usually rolling, which suits the unpredictable timing of expatriate moves. The exception is the British reception class, which fills in the autumn term and is rarely available later in the year. Most settings ask for a parent observation visit before confirming a place, and a small number including the leading Montessori schools run a child trial morning.
Expatriate early years families cluster in three zones. Bonifacio Global City and Taguig for International School Manila, British School Manila and the densest concentration of expatriate professionals. Makati and Forbes Park for the slightly older expatriate cohort and the families who use private school buses to Bonifacio. Alabang for the southern suburb families who prefer quieter housing and a 25 minute commute to the Mamplasan campuses.
