The Manila primary landscape
Metro Manila has more than 25 international schools that deliver the primary stage, the largest segment of the international market. The cluster splits across three main curricula. The IB Primary Years Programme sits at five schools led by International School Manila and the Beacon Academy. The English National Curriculum across key stages 1 and 2 is delivered at British School Manila and three smaller British providers. The US elementary track, grades 1 to 5, is the dominant model at the American Schools and several mission funded campuses.
Primary intake matters in Manila because it sets the next decade of family planning. Most families who enrol at primary stay through secondary, with the strongest retention at the IB continuum schools and the British curriculum schools that offer a full key stage 5 pathway. Switching curriculum mid primary is possible but disruptive, particularly when moving between the British and American calendars where year groups and grade equivalents do not align cleanly.
Manila primary schools are well staffed by Southeast Asian standards. The leading schools cap class sizes at 22 to 24 in key stages 1 and 2 and at 20 to 22 in lower elementary, with at least one teaching assistant per class through to year 3 or grade 3.
The three primary curricula in Manila
The IB Primary Years Programme is inquiry led and transdisciplinary. Six units of inquiry per year frame the learning, with literacy and numeracy embedded in real world contexts rather than taught in isolated blocks. The PYP suits families who plan to stay in the IB continuum through MYP and the IB Diploma, and our Manila IB hub covers the full pathway.
The English National Curriculum at British School Manila and the smaller British providers follows the familiar key stages 1 and 2 sequence with end of stage assessment. Phonics is structured, literacy and numeracy lead the timetable and the year 6 SATs equivalent provides a clear measurable exit point.
The US elementary track, grades 1 to 5, varies more between providers. International School Manila uses the IB PYP as the framing curriculum but anchors literacy and numeracy in US Common Core standards, which is a deliberate hybrid that prepares for the strongest US universities. Brent International School Manila runs a more traditional US elementary programme aligned to the AdvancED accreditation framework.

Fees and class sizes
Primary fees in Manila ladder by tier. The value tier, USD 7,000 to 11,000 per year, includes smaller faith based and bilingual primary stage providers. The mid tier, USD 11,000 to 16,500, captures Reedley International, Singapore School Manila and the British curriculum providers outside the flagship. The premium tier, USD 16,500 to 22,000, is International School Manila, British School Manila and Brent International. Our Manila international school fees guide shows the all in figure including capital fees.
Class sizes are tighter than the wider Southeast Asia average. International School Manila caps primary classes at 22, British School Manila at 24, Brent at 20. At the smaller British providers class sizes can run lower in years 3 and 4, sometimes as low as 15, with the trade off that a single weak cohort is more visible in the overall school identity.

Illustrative example schools
Three illustrative schools, not a ranking. Each is well established in the Manila primary market and is named regularly in expatriate parent forums.
International School Manila Primary in Bonifacio Global City is the largest primary stage operation in the country, with around 600 students across the elementary years. It runs the IB Primary Years Programme as the framing curriculum, anchored in US Common Core standards for literacy and numeracy, and feeds directly into the middle school and the IB Diploma.
British School Manila Primary, also in Taguig, delivers the English National Curriculum across key stages 1 and 2 with the standard year 6 SATs equivalent at exit. Reception through year 6 sits on the same Taguig campus, which keeps the early years and primary stages closely connected.
Brent International School Manila Primary in Mamplasan runs a US elementary programme on a large green campus south of the city. It is the southern alternative to the Bonifacio schools and feeds the Brent middle school and the IB Diploma on the same site.
Admissions and where families live
Primary admissions in Manila run on the same calendar as the wider international school market. Applications for the August 2026 academic year opened in October 2025 at most schools. The tier 1 schools, International School Manila, British School Manila and Brent, close their priority intake by mid January 2026, with regular admissions running through to March and waiting list movement into early summer.
Mid year transfers into primary year groups are common in Manila and accepted at most schools when places exist. The strongest transfer windows are over the December break and around the Easter return. Some schools require an entrance assessment from year 2 upward, which is usually a literacy and numeracy benchmark rather than a competitive sifting test.
Primary families cluster in Bonifacio Global City for International School Manila and British School Manila. Makati and the southern Forbes Park belt for the older expatriate cohort. Alabang for Brent International School Manila and the Beacon Academy families. For wider city context, our Manila city hub covers housing and the relocation paperwork.
