How many IB schools in Mumbai
Mumbai currently lists 28 authorised IB World Schools with the International Baccalaureate Organization. That makes it the largest IB cluster in India by a wide margin, ahead of Bengaluru and the Delhi NCR. The mix splits roughly evenly: about 14 schools offer the IB Diploma Programme at senior school, 16 run the Primary Years Programme, and 12 hold a Middle Years Programme authorisation. Around 11 schools offer the full continuum from PYP through to Diploma, which matters if you are committing to IB from age 3.
The cohort is dominated by Indian promoter family schools that built IB campuses in the 2000s and 2010s, including Dhirubhai Ambani, Oberoi, Singhania and the Jamnabai Narsee network. Three campuses sit in the genuine international category, with cohorts that are predominantly expatriate: the American School of Bombay, Ascend International and the Bombay International School at sixth form.
Cohort sizes are larger than in the European IB hubs. Mumbai IB Diploma cohorts typically run 60 to 180 students per Year 12, with Dhirubhai Ambani and Oberoi pushing toward the upper end. Subject choice is broader as a result, with Spanish, Mandarin, Hindi A and B, and the rarer Group 4 sciences all running consistently each year.
Fees and the Mumbai IB tiers
IB tuition in Mumbai groups into three tiers. The value tier sits at INR 2.4 lakh to INR 4.5 lakh per year and covers the smaller IB schools and the lower primary years at the larger names. The mid tier, INR 4.5 lakh to INR 7.5 lakh, captures most of the established Indian promoter family schools at secondary, including JBCN, Singhania and Ecole Mondiale.
The premium tier, INR 7.5 lakh to INR 12 lakh, is Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Oberoi at OGC, the American School of Bombay and Ascend International. Annual tuition is not the full cost. Mumbai IB schools layer a non refundable admission fee of INR 1 lakh to INR 5 lakh in year one, a refundable security deposit of INR 50,000 to INR 3 lakh, a transport contract of INR 50,000 to INR 1.2 lakh for parents using the bus network, and IB Diploma examination fees of roughly INR 80,000 to INR 1.2 lakh in Year 12. Illustrative example schools
The five schools below are illustrative, not a ranking. Each has a multi year IB Diploma record, large enough cohorts to make subject availability reliable, and a clear identity in the Mumbai market.
Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Bandra Kurla Complex runs the full PYP, MYP and Diploma Programme with one of the highest cohort averages in India, regularly above 38 points. Strong record into Oxbridge, US Ivy League and the top US liberal arts colleges.
Oberoi International School operates two campuses, JVLR and the OGC site, both authorised for the full IB continuum. Diploma cohorts at OGC sit around 45 average, with consistent placement into UK, US and Canadian universities.
American School of Bombay in BKC delivers the IB Diploma alongside a US high school diploma with AP, drawing a heavily expatriate cohort. The careers counselling team is one of the largest in the city.
Ascend International in BKC is a smaller continuum school, with a more intimate cohort and a strong concept based curriculum reputation across PYP and MYP.
JBCN International School runs two campuses in Parel and Borivali, both IB World Schools with the Diploma at the Parel campus and IGCSE at Borivali, useful for families wanting a less premium tier IB option.
Where IB families live
Mumbai IB families cluster across four bands. Bandra Kurla Complex and Bandra West dominate the international IB world thanks to ASB, Dhirubhai Ambani, Ascend and the embassy circuit. Housing here is a mix of high rise serviced apartments and the older Bandra West bungalow stock, at a significant premium across the city.
Powai and Hiranandani serve families anchored to the Oberoi JVLR campus and the wider Eastern Express Highway tech belt, with the Hiranandani complex providing the closest thing to a self contained gated community Mumbai offers. Goregaon and Andheri West sit between, serving Oberoi OGC and several of the smaller IB campuses, and remain the practical middle ground for families with one parent commuting into BKC.
Worli and Lower Parel serve the southern IB families using JBCN Parel and Singhania, with the Worli Sea Face high rises drawing senior expatriate families. American and European expatriates cluster heavily in BKC and Bandra West; Indian return families and NRI families splits more evenly across Powai, Worli and BKC.
Admissions calendar
The Mumbai academic year begins in early June, which shapes the admissions cycle distinctively from European IB hubs. Most schools open applications for the June 2026 academic year between September and November 2025. Tier 1 names close their main Year 1 and Year 6 intakes by mid January, with assessment days running January to March. Year 11 entry for the IB Diploma Programme is the second main intake, with applications closing around February or March.
Mid year transfers are less common in Mumbai than in Dubai or Singapore because the academic year is misaligned with most other international hubs. Schools will accept transfers in October and November for families relocating from northern hemisphere September starts, but Diploma transfers after the start of Year 12 are very difficult. If you are committing to a Tier 1 IB school, apply 12 to 15 months ahead; for the most competitive schools, register interest a full year earlier. Can students transfer into a Mumbai IB school mid year?

The June academic year start in India also makes mid year moves harder than in northern hemisphere hubs.
