How many IB schools in Phuket
Phuket has four authorised IB World Schools listed with the International Baccalaureate Organization, an unusual concentration for an island of 400,000 residents and a reflection of the digital-nomad and lifestyle-migration wave of the 2010s and 2020s. Three deliver the IB Diploma Programme at sixth form, two the IB Middle Years Programme and one the IB Primary Years Programme. UWC Thailand in Thalang runs the full PYP, MYP and Diploma continuum on a single site, the most demanding authorisation level the IB awards and the only such school on the island.
The Phuket IB cluster grew sharply after 2010 when British International School Phuket added the IB Diploma to its existing A Level pathway, becoming the first dual-track school on the island. UWC Thailand opened in 2009 and went through full continuum authorisation by 2015, anchoring the IB community on the north of the island. The most recent additions are HeadStart International School, which entered IB candidate status for the Diploma, and the smaller IB primary-stage providers serving the Cherngtalay and Mai Khao corridors. Cohort sizes remain small by Bangkok standards: even the largest Phuket IB school carries roughly 60 students per Diploma year group.
Fees and the Phuket tiers
IB tuition in Phuket divides into three rough tiers. The value tier sits at THB 480,000 to THB 620,000 a year and covers the smaller IB candidate streams and the lower-secondary years inside the larger IB schools. The mid tier runs THB 620,000 to THB 820,000 and captures HeadStart Diploma fees, BISP middle years and the UWC Thailand mid-school cohort. The premium tier, THB 820,000 to THB 980,000, includes BISP Diploma sixth form, UWC Thailand sixth form and the small UWC boarding premium for international scholars.
Registration fees are non-refundable and run THB 50,000 to THB 100,000 depending on the school. Most schools charge a one-time refundable capital levy of one to two terms of fees, payable on first registration. School bus fees of THB 60,000 to THB 90,000 a year are standard for families outside walking distance, an important consideration on an island where the school catchments span 30 to 45 kilometres between Mai Khao in the north and Chalong in the south. Illustrative example schools
The schools below are illustrative, not a ranking. Each has at least 10 years of operating history in Phuket or carries full IB continuum authorisation.
UWC Thailand in Thalang, north of Phuket Town, is the island’s only full IB continuum school, founded 2009 and authorised across PYP, MYP and Diploma. Around 540 students from age 18 months to 18, with a distinctive UWC mission-driven culture and a sixth form scholar programme drawing students from over 50 nationalities. Mean Diploma score consistently above 34.
British International School Phuket, in Koh Kaew between Phuket Town and the airport, is the largest international school in southern Thailand at around 880 students. BISP sixth form offers both the IB Diploma and A Level in parallel, an unusual hybrid on an island this size. The school is also home to one of Asia’s leading tennis, golf and football academies, drawing student-athletes from across Southeast Asia.
HeadStart International School in Chalong runs IB Diploma alongside its Cambridge Lower Secondary and IGCSE programme, with an IB candidate authorisation supporting the senior years. Around 420 students from age 2 to 18, with a south-of-the-island catchment serving Rawai, Nai Harn and Kata. Stronger emphasis on multilingual and Mandarin tracks than the rest of the Phuket cluster.
Berda Claude International School in Mai Khao runs the IB Primary Years Programme alongside a French and bilingual stream, the northernmost international school on the island and convenient for Mai Khao and Bang Tao families.

Where IB families live
IB families in Phuket cluster along the western and northern coasts, shaped by school catchment and the island’s east-west traffic patterns. Cherngtalay and Bang Tao, on the west coast 15 to 25 minutes from BISP and UWC Thailand by car, host the largest concentration of European, Australian and North American IB families. Compound housing in Laguna Village, the long-established 1990s resort-residential development, includes school-friendly amenities, beach access and a 24-hour security model that appeals to international families.
Mai Khao and the airport corridor, in the north, draws families who prioritise short commutes to UWC Thailand and BISP and direct international flight access. The Anchan and Trichada residential pockets here have grown sharply since 2020 with the digital-nomad and remote-work wave. Phuket Town and Koh Kaew, in the centre, offer the shortest commute to BISP and access to the island’s administrative services, the public hospital and the wet market. A smaller IB family cohort sits at Rawai and Chalong in the south, anchored by HeadStart International School and convenient for Kata, Karon and Naiharn beach access. Russian, Israeli and Eastern European IB families are over-represented in this southern cluster.
Admissions calendar
Most Phuket IB schools run on a continuous rolling admissions cycle but commit places at the start of each August academic year. Year 12 IB Diploma entry rounds open at BISP, UWC Thailand and HeadStart in October of the preceding year, with most subject combinations confirmed by March. UWC Thailand additionally runs a separate scholar-track admissions cycle for international applicants, with applications closing in January for the following August. Late applicants for August entry are reviewed on a rolling basis subject to space.
The most over-subscribed entry points are early years, where waiting lists at UWC Thailand and BISP can stretch 6 to 12 months. Mid-year entry is common at lower year groups due to expatriate movement, particularly in January for families relocating during the European Christmas window.
