IB in Prague: central Europe's deepest market

Prague has built the strongest IB cluster in central and eastern Europe over the past two decades. Five schools are authorised to deliver at least one IB programme, three of them running the full PYP, MYP and Diploma continuum on a single campus, and two of them adding the Diploma to a British IGCSE and A Level core. By count alone, the city overtakes Vienna, Warsaw and Budapest in IB provision. By depth at the Diploma stage, it sits behind Geneva and the Hague in continental Europe but ahead of every other capital in the former Eastern bloc.

What drives the Prague IB market is the city's role as a regional headquarters for multinational corporates in pharmaceuticals, technology, automotive and financial services. The expatriate workforce skews toward longer postings, often five years and up, with families that need a curriculum continuity not provided by Czech state schooling. Layered on top is a growing Czech professional class that prefers the IB Diploma to the Maturita for university applications outside the Czech Republic. The combined demand has kept all five Prague IB schools at capacity at the Diploma stage.

The five together produce roughly 200 IB Diploma graduates a year, the largest IB Diploma footprint in central Europe.

Fees and the all in cost

Prague IB fees split into three bands. The entry band, EUR 12,000 to EUR 16,000 a year, covers primary and lower middle years at Park Lane, Riverside and ECP. The mid band, EUR 16,000 to EUR 22,000 a year, covers the bulk of MYP and lower Diploma across the city. The premium band, EUR 22,000 to EUR 28,000 a year, covers the IB Diploma at International School of Prague and the upper Diploma years at Park Lane. ECP sits below the premium band thanks to its Czech state recognition and a modest hybrid funding arrangement.

Beyond tuition expect a one off registration fee of CZK 30,000 to CZK 80,000 (EUR 1,200 to EUR 3,200), an annual capital levy of CZK 15,000 to CZK 40,000, lunch and bus of CZK 50,000 to CZK 90,000 a year, uniform and PE kit of CZK 6,000 to CZK 12,000 at the British-style schools, and the IB Diploma exam entry of CZK 25,000 to CZK 35,000 in Year 12. Admissions calendar and where IB families live

The Czech school year runs from early September to late June, with breaks at Christmas, the spring half term in February and Easter. Most Prague IB schools open applications for the following September in October, with offers from January through March. International School of Prague and Park Lane operate published waitlists at the most popular year groups, particularly Year 1, Year 7 and Year 12. Mid year transfers are possible because the Prague expatriate workforce, particularly in shared services and corporate operations, turns over predictably with parent assignment cycles.

IB families in Prague cluster in four main residential corridors. Nebusice, Hanspaulka and Prague 6 west for ISP families using the dedicated school catchment. Mala Strana, Hradcany and Dejvice for Park Lane families. Karlin, Holesovice and Prague 7 east for Riverside School Prague. Vinohrady and Vrsovice central for families using the tram and metro to reach several IB schools. For sibling hubs see the Prague British curriculum hub and the Prague city guide.
