IB provision in Shanghai

Shanghai has built one of the deepest IB ecosystems anywhere outside Geneva. Roughly 25 schools across Pudong and Puxi are authorised to deliver at least one IB programme, and the combined PYP cohort, which sits inside both designated international schools and a handful of private bilingual schools, is the largest in mainland China. The Diploma cluster is concentrated at around 18 schools, several of which run the full continuum from PYP through to Diploma. This depth is unusual for Asia, where most cities outside Singapore and Hong Kong rely on a single all-through IB anchor.

The pattern of provision reflects the city's expat demographics. Pudong, especially the Jinqiao and Lujiazui corridors, hosts the largest cluster of all-through IB schools because that is where American, European and Korean corporate families have settled around the financial district. Puxi, particularly Hongqiao and the Gubei area, leans toward British and bilingual provision but still carries two or three significant IB schools. The presence of the Diploma at YK Pao School and a small number of Shanghai Municipal Education Commission approved private schools means a limited Chinese national IB pathway exists, but the dominant model remains foreign-only enrolment.

Foreign passport rules

Access is the question that shapes every IB school search in Shanghai. The Shanghai Municipal Education Commission requires that schools designated as international accept only students holding foreign passports, with limited exceptions for children of returnees. This is a national policy, not a local one, and it is enforced at registration. Families with one Chinese national parent should plan an immigration conversation early, because passport status of the child, not the parents, is decisive. A small group of approved private bilingual schools, including YK Pao School and SUIS Wanyuan, are permitted to enrol Chinese nationals and deliver the IB Diploma alongside Chinese curriculum requirements such as Gaokao preparation streams.

Fees and what they cover

Shanghai IB fees split into two clear tiers. The mid tier, CNY 200,000 to CNY 280,000 per year, covers the established mainstream IB World Schools such as Western International School of Shanghai and Shanghai Singapore International School. The premium tier, CNY 290,000 to CNY 360,000, covers Concordia, Shanghai American School and Dulwich for its IB stream. Diploma years lift fees by roughly 10 percent on Year 11. Capital levies of CNY 30,000 to 50,000 are common at the premium tier, and IB exam fees of CNY 5,000 to 8,000 land in Year 13. Where IB families live

IB Diploma families in Shanghai cluster around four zones. Jinqiao in Pudong is the historic heart of expat family life, with Concordia, Dulwich Pudong and Shanghai American School Pudong all within a 15 minute drive. Lujiazui and Century Park for families working in finance who want the shorter Diploma commute. Hongqiao and Gubei in Puxi for families based around Western International, the consular district and Hongqiao Airport. Xuhui and the Former French Concession for parents who want city living and accept a longer school commute by school bus or driver.

Admissions calendar

Shanghai IB schools run a stricter cycle than the rolling intake common in Dubai or Bangkok. The main application window opens between October and January for the following August start. Reception, Year 1 and Year 7 places fill first. The Diploma entry into Year 12 is possible at many schools but limited, with subject choice locked by April. Most schools require an assessment day, English language screening for non-native speakers and a teacher reference. Applying outside the window is possible but signals weaker odds. University outcomes from Shanghai IB

University destinations from Shanghai IB schools track the global IB pattern with a strong American skew. About 35 percent head to US universities, with Ivies, top liberal arts colleges and the University of California system featuring annually. Around 25 percent go to the UK, with Oxbridge, UCL and Edinburgh dominating. Canada and Australia each take roughly 10 percent, the Netherlands and Hong Kong about 10 percent, and the balance returns to Asian universities including NUS, NTU, HKU and a small but rising group going to top Chinese universities through international tracks. To weigh options head-to-head, our comparison tool works across IB, AP and A Level destinations.
