The Sydney school landscape
Sydney has three distinct school tiers. NSW public schools are free, multicultural and excellent (especially selective high schools like North Sydney Boys, James Ruse). Australian-curriculum private schools like Cranbrook, Scots College, Sydney Grammar, SCEGGS Darlinghurst and Kambala dominate the prestige tier. True international schools include International Grammar School (IGS), German International School Sydney, Lycée Condorcet Sydney, Sydney Japanese International School, and selected IB schools.
Most expat families on shorter postings choose IB-track international schools. Long-stay families often integrate via NSW public or one of the Australian-curriculum independent schools.
HSC vs IB DP in Sydney?
The NSW Higher School Certificate works well for Australian university entry. IB DP is preferred for globally mobile families. Our guide compares both pathways.
