How many ib schools in Zurich

Zurich Canton currently lists nine authorised IB World Schools. Eight deliver the IB Diploma at sixth form, with the ninth offering only the Primary Years Programme. Most schools sit south of the lake in Adliswil, Kilchberg, Wadenswil, Zumikon, Kusnacht and Erlenbach. A small cluster also operates north of the city in Bulach and Wallisellen.

Diploma cohorts in Zurich are smaller than in larger expat hubs such as Singapore or Dubai. A typical Zurich IB Diploma cohort runs to 40 to 80 pupils, with the largest school graduating around 130 a year. Smaller cohorts mean greater attention but limited subject availability, especially at Higher Level in less common subjects such as Latin, Music and the IB Film course.

The cluster is mature and competitive. Most authorised schools have delivered the Diploma for more than a decade, with strong correlations between programme age and Diploma results. Newer IB providers in the canton are still finding their feet on Extended Essay supervision and Theory of Knowledge teaching, although the canton-wide IB average remains above the global IB average of 30 points.

Fees and tiers

IB Diploma tuition in Zurich sits within three rough tiers. The value tier, CHF 32,000 to CHF 36,000 a year, covers smaller IB schools and lower senior school years at the larger providers. The mid tier, CHF 37,000 to CHF 42,000, captures the principal IB schools including Inter-Community School Zurich and most of Zurich International School. The premium tier, CHF 43,000 to CHF 47,000, applies to the most established schools in their senior years.

Published tuition is not the all-in cost. Capital contributions are common at Zurich schools, often a one-off charge of CHF 8,000 to CHF 15,000 at enrolment. Examination registration, school trips, lunch contributions and transport add a further 8 to 12 percent. Detailed loading patterns sit in our Zurich fees guide.

Illustrative example schools

The five schools below are illustrative, not a ranking. Each is an authorised IB World School in or near Zurich Canton, with a continuous track record of Diploma graduates entering Swiss federal and overseas universities.

Zurich International School (Adliswil, Kilchberg, Wadenswil). The flagship IB provider for Zurich, running the full PYP, MYP and DP continuum across three campuses south of the city centre.

Inter-Community School Zurich (Zumikon). On the Gold Coast above the lake, ICS runs both IB Diploma and IGCSE pathways at senior school, with PYP from age 3.

Lakeside School (Kusnacht). Smaller IB provider on the lake shore offering PYP and MYP with a senior school partnership for Diploma.

Where families live

IB families in Zurich cluster around four areas. The Gold Coast, covering Kusnacht, Zumikon, Zollikon and Erlenbach, is the most popular catchment for senior management roles in finance and pharmaceuticals, with ICS Zurich and Lakeside School on the doorstep. The lake south shore, covering Kilchberg, Adliswil and Wadenswil, holds the three Zurich International School campuses and is the natural home for ZIS families. Central districts such as Enge and Wiedikon suit families using SIS Zurich and other city centre schools. The eastern shore around Pfaffikon and Lachen serves Obersee Bilingual School families.

Commute times in Zurich are short by international school standards. Almost all IB schools sit within a 25 minute drive of central Zurich. Public transport is widely used, and many pupils travel independently from age 11 onward.

Admissions calendar

Most Zurich IB schools open their main August intake window in October of the previous year and close priority deadlines by late January. Mid-year transfers in PYP and MYP are common where places exist. Diploma Programme transfers after October of Year 12 are usually declined because Internal Assessment work is already underway and subject choices are locked.

If you are targeting a tier 1 IB school, apply nine to twelve months before your desired start. Late applicants are placed on waiting lists and offered places as withdrawals come through, typically between May and August. Mid-year applications are accepted with assessment in mathematics, English and a written task. Capital contributions are payable on acceptance.
