The Zurich fee landscape

Zurich's international school market is concentrated around a few premium schools. Zurich International School (ZIS) is the long-established anchor with multiple campuses. Inter-Community School Zurich (ICS), International School Winterthur and International School of Zurich North round out the premium tier. Mid-tier and bilingual options exist at lower fees. Zurich canton public schools are free to all residents (including non-Swiss residents with valid permits). a serious option for families willing to commit to German-language schooling.

The hidden extras

Total cost-of-place adds 10-15% to headline fees. Largest line items: enrolment/registration (CHF 1,500-3,500 one-time), school bus (CHF 4,500-7,500 per year. Switzerland's expensive transport flows through), Mensa/lunch (CHF 1,800-3,000), uniform where required (rare in Zurich; CHF 0-700), trips and ski weeks (CHF 1,800-4,500. typical of Switzerland), exam entries (CHF 800-1,800 in IGCSE/IB years), books and materials (CHF 250-650).

Year-on-year fee inflation

Zurich school fees rose 3.4% on average across 2025-26, near Swiss CPI. Premium schools tracked 3.5-4.0%. Strong CHF means USD-paid families saw fees rise meaningfully more in dollar terms (4-7% depending on currency).

The public school option

Zurich canton public schools are free to residents. Most teaching is in Swiss German (Hochdeutsch / Standard German in classrooms; Swiss German in playground). Strong academic outcomes leading to Matura. For families with longer Zurich time horizons (4+ years) and willingness to develop strong German in their children, public school is genuinely competitive. Best for children entering at primary age.

Zurich also has Tagesschulen (full-day schools with extended hours) which differ from traditional half-day public schools and are increasingly popular among working expat families.

Zurich vs. Geneva

Premium ZIS day fees at CHF 38,000-44,000 sit just below Geneva's Ecolint at CHF 42,000-48,000. Both are dramatically more expensive than any non-Swiss European city. Switzerland public schools are stronger relative to international schools than in some neighbouring countries. many ambitious Swiss-resident families use canton schools and supplement with private tutoring rather than pay international school fees.

Sibling discounts

Most Zurich premium schools offer 5-10% sibling discounts. ZIS offers a sliding scale. See our sibling discount table for 2026 figures.

Currency exposure

The Swiss franc has been one of the strongest currencies globally. CHF-denominated fees represent significant currency risk for non-CHF earners. UN/INGO families paid in CHF face no domestic currency risk; private sector USD/EUR/GBP-paid families carry full risk.
