Abu Dhabi is the lower-tax, regulated UAE option with predictable school fees and tight family logistics. Jakarta offers cheaper daily living, stronger help networks and the prestige of Jakarta Intercultural School, but heavier traffic and longer settling-in. Both deliver excellent IB Diploma provision.

Schools landscape side by side

Abu Dhabi has about 200 private schools regulated by the Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK). Flagships parents shortlist include Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, Brighton College Abu Dhabi, the British School Al Khubairat, the American Community School of Abu Dhabi (ACS), Repton Abu Dhabi and GEMS World Academy. ADEK's annual inspection ratings and fee caps make the market unusually transparent. See our Abu Dhabi schools hub for ratings.

Jakarta has roughly 20 major international schools concentrated south of the city. The schools parents recognise include Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS), the British School Jakarta (BSJ), Australian Independent School (AIS), Sekolah Pelita Harapan (SPH) and the German School Jakarta (DSJ). JIS in particular is one of the strongest American international schools in Asia. See Jakarta schools hub for fees and ratings.

Fees and value for money

Abu Dhabi runs at mid-band UAE pricing. Brighton, Cranleigh and ACS publish secondary fees of AED 85,000 to AED 105,000 (USD 23,000 to USD 29,000). Mid-tier schools sit at AED 55,000 to AED 75,000. ADEK reviews and caps fee increases annually against inspection ratings, which keeps the system predictable. Add 15 to 25 percent for registration, transport, uniforms and trips.

Jakarta's top schools are surprisingly expensive. JIS and BSJ publish secondary fees of USD 30,000 to USD 40,000 at the IBDP stage, comparable to Singapore. Mid-tier schools such as AIS run USD 17,000 to USD 25,000. A one-off enrolment fee at JIS sits at USD 27,500, which most employers cover but families paying privately need to plan for. Curriculum availability

Abu Dhabi covers British (the dominant stream), American, IB and Indian. Brighton, Cranleigh and Repton run dual British and IB pathways at sixth form. ACS leads the American track. The Indian curriculum sector serves the large South Asian community. Read our British curriculum hub and IB hub for details.

Jakarta covers American (JIS), British (BSJ), IB (multiple schools), Australian (AIS) and German. The IB Diploma is the most portable exit credential. JIS's American high school diploma plus AP is the prestige route for US university applications. Families relocating mid-cycle find the IB easiest to slot into.

Neighbourhoods families pick

In Abu Dhabi, families with school-age children cluster on Saadiyat Island (Cranleigh, Redwood Montessori), Yas Island (West Yas Academy, Yas Mall lifestyle), Al Reem Island for newer high-rise apartments, Al Raha Gardens and Khalifa City for villa living near British School Al Khubairat. A four-bedroom villa with garden runs AED 18,000 to AED 28,000 per month.

In Jakarta, families pick Kemang, Cilandak and Pondok Indah in South Jakarta for proximity to JIS, BSJ and AIS. Pondok Indah houses run USD 3,500 to USD 7,000 per month for a four-bedroom villa with garden and pool, often coming with a maid's quarters and driver's room. Kemang is the trendier rental market. Ground Plus Two compounds are common.

Lifestyle and climate

Abu Dhabi is hot and dry, with summer peaks above 45 degrees Celsius from June to early September and beautiful beach-and-desert winters. The city is calmer than Dubai with a clear family rhythm. Healthcare is excellent on private insurance. Etihad puts Europe at six to eight hours and Asia at four.

Jakarta is hot and humid year round, with monsoon season from November to March and air quality that requires monitoring in the dry months. The lifestyle is built around expat clubs, shopping malls and family compounds. Domestic help is plentiful and affordable, which materially eases family logistics. Indonesia's archipelago of beaches is a weekend flight away.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose Abu Dhabi if you want predictable, regulated school fees, no income tax and big living space. It suits families with younger children who want a calmer pace and outdoor winters, plus easier Europe access for grandparents.

Choose Jakarta if your career is Southeast Asia anchored, your employer covers JIS or BSJ fees, and you want a deeply staffed family life with extensive domestic help. See also Singapore vs Jakarta for the regional comparison.
