Abu Dhabi is dramatically cheaper across school fees, housing and disposable spending, with a tax-free salary on top. Zurich wins on safety, healthcare, public transport, university outcomes and clean alpine living, but at a serious premium. Both cities have credible international school markets, with Abu Dhabi's flagships (Cranleigh, Brighton College, Repton) only just hitting full senior maturity.
Schools landscape side by side
Abu Dhabi's market is regulated by ADEK and includes around 200 private schools, with roughly 25 to 30 in the genuinely international Tier 1 bracket. The names families recognise include Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, Brighton College Abu Dhabi, Repton School, the British School Al Khubairat, GEMS American Academy, Sorbonne Abu Dhabi, the American Community School and the Aldar Academies group. Capacity is generally good outside the top three British names, with most year groups admitting qualified applicants within four to six weeks.
Zurich's market is smaller but deep at the premium end. The two giants are Zurich International School (ZIS, with four campuses), and Inter-Community School Zurich (ICS), with the Swiss International School Zurich, Lakeside School and the SIS Zurich rounding out the bench. ZIS and ICS both run waiting lists at Year 1, 7 and 12 most years. Apply at least a full term ahead, ideally two. See our Abu Dhabi city guide and Zurich city guide for school directories and current admission notes.

Fees and value for money
Cranleigh Abu Dhabi publishes 2025 to 2026 fees of AED 71,500 at early primary up to AED 105,980 at senior school (roughly USD 19,500 to 28,800). Brighton College Abu Dhabi runs AED 50,830 to 80,780 across the year groups, with senior years reaching AED 95,000 to 105,000. Add 15 to 25 percent for transport (AED 4,740), registration (AED 500 to 5,000) and capital or technology levies. Most families budget USD 25,000 to 35,000 per child all in.
Zurich International School publishes 2026 to 2027 fees of CHF 28,000 in early years, CHF 33,000 to 37,000 in primary and CHF 41,000 to 47,000 in secondary, with a one-off CHF 5,000 infrastructure contribution. Inter-Community School Zurich runs CHF 27,000 to 46,000 across the year groups plus a CHF 5,000 to 7,000 capital levy. Lunch, sport and ski camp add another 10 to 20 percent. Curriculum availability
Abu Dhabi has the broader curriculum bench, with British (IGCSE and A Level) leading, IB Diploma growing fast at Cranleigh, ACS and ICS sites, plus strong Indian CBSE and Pakistani options. Zurich is dominated by the IB Diploma at ZIS and ICS, with British IGCSE and A Level at SIS and Lakeside, and Swiss matura at local cantonal schools. Neighbourhoods families pick
In Abu Dhabi, international school families cluster on Saadiyat Island near Cranleigh, in Al Reem and Al Raha for Brighton and Repton, and on Yas Island for the newer Aldar academies. A four bedroom villa on Saadiyat runs AED 250,000 to 450,000 per year (USD 5,500 to 10,000 per month). In Zurich, families pick the lake-side communes of Kusnacht, Zumikon, Erlenbach and Zollikon for ZIS Adliswil, and Wadenswil or Horgen for ICS. A four bedroom house on the gold coast easily runs CHF 8,500 to 14,000 per month.
Lifestyle and climate
Abu Dhabi is hot and dry for nine months of the year, with summer peaks above 45 degrees Celsius keeping family life indoors from June to early September. The winter season, October to April, is when outdoor sport and beach weekends drive family life. Zurich is cool and clean, with full four seasons, world-class winter sports within an hour, and one of the lowest crime rates of any large city. Travel from Abu Dhabi is excellent to Europe, Africa and Asia; Zurich is the natural hub for Europe and runs the best public transport on the continent.
Verdict: who picks which city
Choose Abu Dhabi if you want maximum disposable income, tax-free pay, larger family homes, and a fast track from offer to enrolment. It also suits families with younger children who prioritise extracurricular range and beach weekends. Choose Zurich if safety, calm, world-class public services and academic stability matter more than cost, and your role can absorb the housing and fee premium. Zurich is the stronger city for families approaching Year 11 to 13 where IB Diploma outcomes will shape European university applications.
Most families we work with run both cities through the cost calculator before they commit. The five year all-in delta between similar schools and similar housing is typically USD 200,000 to 350,000 in Abu Dhabi's favour once tax is included.
