Bangkok and Doha both attract relocating families, but for very different reasons. Bangkok offers cultural depth, value for money and a thriving expat scene. Doha runs on zero income tax, big employer packages and a steadily improving family infrastructure.

Schools landscape side by side

Bangkok families shortlist NIST, ISB, Bangkok Patana, Shrewsbury International, Harrow Bangkok, Brighton College Bangkok, Wells, Concordian, KIS and Bangkok Prep. The IB and British markets are both deep, with several full IB continuum schools.

Doha parents look at American School of Doha, Doha British School, Compass International, Park House English School, Newton British School, Qatar Academy and DPS Modern Indian School. School quality has climbed sharply since the 2010s and capacity has expanded with the wider population growth. See our Bangkok city hub and Doha city hub for full lists.

Not sure which city fits your family?

Take the 5 minute school finder quiz, then run the cost calculator for both cities. You get shortlisted schools plus a side by side relocation budget for Bangkok and Doha in under ten minutes.

Fees and value for money

Bangkok premium IB Diploma fees run THB 900,000 to 1,200,000 a year, with capital levies of THB 250,000 to 700,000 amortised over the years a child attends. Doha premium schools run QAR 75,000 to 110,000 a year at IBDP level.

Converted to USD, Bangkok runs roughly 10 to 25 percent cheaper than Doha at the premium tier, before the tax effect is added. Once Doha's zero income tax is factored in, total compensation often pulls back ahead. Use the fees tool to compare net of tax.

Curriculum availability

Both cities deliver the full IB Diploma and a strong British pathway. Bangkok has the deeper IB market, with NIST, ISB and Bangkok Patana all running multi-form Diploma cohorts. Doha has more depth in the American Diploma via the American School of Doha and growing strength in IB at Qatar Academy. CBSE and other Indian boards are available in Doha and not in Bangkok. The IB hub details pathway structure.

Neighbourhoods families pick

Bangkok families gather in Sukhumvit (Phrom Phong, Thong Lor, Ekkamai), Bangna for proximity to Bangkok Patana, and Sathorn for downtown working parents. A four-bedroom Sukhumvit family condo runs THB 90,000 to 220,000 per month.

Doha families pick The Pearl, West Bay, Al Waab and Ain Khaled compounds. A four-bedroom Doha compound villa runs QAR 18,000 to 35,000 per month, often with shared pool, gym and security.

Lifestyle and climate

Bangkok offers Thai food, weekend beaches at Hua Hin or Koh Samui, world-class medical care at Bumrungrad and Bangkok Hospital, and easy connections across Asia. Traffic and air quality in burning season are the main drawbacks. Doha is highly ordered and very safe, with strong family infrastructure since the 2022 World Cup. Summers are brutal and the cultural offer is narrower, though the museum scene has improved sharply.

Day-to-day logistics shape family life in each city. Bangkok offers abundant and affordable domestic help, motorbike-taxi convenience and a 24-hour dining culture that suits two-career families. Doha relies on compound life, employer-provided housing and SUV-based logistics, with quieter streets and stronger sense of safety for younger children. Healthcare is excellent in both, anchored by Bumrungrad and Bangkok Hospital in Thailand, and Sidra Medicine and Hamad in Qatar. Pack expectations for weather routines: Bangkok's rains shape monsoon term, while Doha's summer drives life indoors from June through September.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose Bangkok if you want Asian cultural depth, the deepest IB market in Southeast Asia, and a family lifestyle that punches well above its price tag.

Choose Doha if a corporate Gulf package, zero income tax and large family compound life are the deciding factors, and you can build routines around the heat.

Run both through the cost calculator with realistic salary, rent and three years of fees per child. Pay attention to the secondary costs that often surprise new arrivals, such as Bangkok's capital levy at premium British schools or Doha's upfront school transport and registration fees in year one. Both are recoverable line items but they shape the first-year cash flow significantly.

Frequently asked questions

Are Doha schools open to non-Qatari nationals?

Yes. Most international schools in Doha are designed for expat families and admit on a first-come, first-served basis plus standard assessment. Some have national balance quotas but availability is broad.

Is the IB Diploma well established in Bangkok?

Yes. NIST has run IB programmes since the 1990s and Bangkok Patana, ISB and KIS all offer the full IB Diploma. Bangkok is one of the largest IB markets in Southeast Asia.

Can I drink alcohol in Doha?

Yes, in licensed hotels and the Pearl. Home consumption requires a permit. Public drinking and Ramadan rules are strictly enforced. Most expat families adapt quickly.

Which city is safer for children?

Both are very safe by global standards. Doha has near-zero violent crime statistics. Bangkok's safety record is excellent in the expat districts and around schools, with traffic the main risk.

Is air quality in Bangkok a serious issue?

Burning season from January to April can produce poor air quality in northern Thailand and Bangkok. Most international schools have indoor air filtration and switch outdoor activities indoors on bad days.
