Dubai is the deeper, faster and more competitive market by every measure. Doha is smaller, more relaxed and noticeably cheaper at the mid tier, with a school market dominated by a handful of strong names. Both cities are now over 85 percent expat by population and both run their international school sectors largely in English.
Schools landscape side by side
Dubai's market is the larger of the two by school count, with more than 220 private schools regulated by KHDA. Flagships include GEMS Wellington International, JESS Dubai, Dubai College, Repton Dubai, Dwight School Dubai and Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills. Outside Tier 1, capacity is generally good and many families secure a place within a single term.
Doha's market is much smaller but quality at the top tier is high. Families shortlist Doha College, the American School of Doha (ASD), Park House English School, Compass International School Doha, Qatar Academy and Newton British School. ASD and Doha College in particular have year-on-year waiting lists for popular intakes, but mid-tier schools generally admit within a term.

Fees and value for money
Dubai secondary tuition sits around USD 18,000 to 24,000 per year for most schools, with premium schools (Dwight, SISD) pushing USD 28,000 to 30,000. KHDA caps annual fee increases against inspection ratings, which gives parents budget visibility most cities do not offer. See our Dubai fees guide for the all-in load.
Doha's range is wider. Mid-tier schools sit at QAR 30,000 to 65,000 per year (roughly USD 8,200 to 17,900), while ASD, Doha College and Qatar Academy reach QAR 85,000 to 125,000+ for upper secondary (roughly USD 23,000 to 34,000). Many employer packages cover school fees in full, which materially changes the comparison. Use the cost calculator for a five year model.
Curriculum availability
Both cities are British curriculum heavy with strong IB and American provision. Dubai's bench is wider at every tier; Doha is concentrated around a few flagship names per curriculum. The IB Diploma is the safest portable credential in either city. See the IB hub, British curriculum hub and American curriculum hub.
Neighbourhoods families pick
Dubai international school families cluster in Arabian Ranches, Dubai Hills Estate, Jumeirah, The Springs, Mirdif and Al Barsha. A four-bedroom villa with a garden runs USD 4,000 to 6,500 per month, dramatically larger than equivalent housing in Doha or anywhere in Asia.
Doha families cluster in West Bay (apartments and townhouses near ASD), The Pearl-Qatar (premium island living), Al Waab and Education City around Qatar Academy, plus Ain Khaled near Doha College. Four-bedroom villas run QAR 18,000 to 35,000 per month, with compounds offering pools and security.
Lifestyle and climate
Both cities are hot and dry, with summer peaks above 45 degrees Celsius that confine family life indoors from June to early September. Dubai has more diversified leisure (skiing, beaches, malls, regional travel) and a much wider F&B and entertainment market. Doha is quieter, more conservative, with a slower social rhythm. Both are safe, well-policed and family-friendly. Dubai's international airport and route network are unmatched in the Gulf.
Verdict: who picks which city
Choose Dubai if you want maximum choice, faster admissions, the broadest extracurricular range and the easiest regional travel. Choose Doha if your employer package is strong (especially with covered school fees), you prefer a quieter family rhythm and you are happy with a smaller school shortlist. Most families we work with run both Gulf cities through the cost calculator before they commit.
Frequently asked questions
Is Dubai or Doha cheaper for international school families in 2026?
Doha is marginally cheaper on housing and day-to-day costs (around 5 to 10 percent). School fees range from much cheaper at the mid tier in Doha to broadly comparable at the top tier. Employer fee coverage is more common in Doha and significantly changes the maths.
Which city has better international schools?
Dubai has a much deeper bench at every tier. Doha has fewer schools but strong quality at the top, anchored by Doha College, ASD and Qatar Academy.
How does the family visa compare?
Both rely on employer sponsorship. The UAE offers an additional Golden Visa route for qualified professionals, investors and outstanding talent, which gives long-term residency independent of employer. Doha's family residence permits are tied to the main sponsor.
How long are admissions waiting lists?
Dubai mid-tier schools admit within 4 to 6 weeks; Tier 1 names (Dubai College, JESS Jumeirah, Repton) have year-on-year waiting lists. Doha is similar at the top tier, with ASD and Doha College carrying multi-term waiting lists for popular year groups.
Where do expat families live in each city?
Dubai families pick Arabian Ranches, Dubai Hills, Jumeirah, The Springs and Mirdif. Doha families cluster in West Bay, The Pearl-Qatar, Al Waab and Ain Khaled.
