Bangkok is the cheaper, easier landing for international school families, with a deep British and IB market and a famously relaxed expat lifestyle. Seoul is more expensive and intense, but the international schools that exist (notably Seoul Foreign School and Korea International School) produce some of the strongest US university outcomes in Asia. Climate and pace are the two factors families most often misjudge in advance.

Schools landscape side by side

Bangkok's market is broad and well-supplied. The flagships are International School Bangkok (ISB), Bangkok Patana School (the largest British school in Asia), NIST International School, KIS International School, Harrow International School Bangkok, Shrewsbury Riverside, Brighton College Bangkok and the British International School Bangkok. Most have capacity outside Years 1, 7 and 12 with 1 to 3 month wait times.

Seoul's market is smaller and more concentrated. The big four are Seoul Foreign School (SFS), Korea International School (KIS) Pangyo and Jeju, Yongsan International School of Seoul (YISS) and Dwight School Seoul. Dulwich College Seoul opened in 2010 and is now a strong secondary option. Admissions to SFS, KIS and Dwight tighten quickly during summer and require 4 to 8 month lead times.

Fees and value for money

Bangkok tuition is one of Asia's better-value premium markets. Top schools (ISB, Patana, NIST) charge THB 800,000 to THB 1,200,000 for senior years (USD 22,000 to USD 33,000). Mid-tier schools sit at THB 500,000 to THB 800,000. Add 20 to 25 percent for entry fees, transport and exam costs in Year 1.

Seoul tuition is materially higher. SFS, KIS Pangyo, Dwight Seoul and YISS publish senior fees of KRW 35,000,000 to KRW 50,000,000 (USD 26,000 to USD 38,000) plus capital and enrolment fees of KRW 5,000,000 to KRW 15,000,000 in Year 1. Many multinationals operating in Korea include school fee allowances in expat packages worth KRW 20,000,000 to KRW 40,000,000 per child. Use the cost calculator to model both cities.

Curriculum availability

Bangkok offers the widest curriculum mix in Southeast Asia. British IGCSE and A Level dominate by school count (Patana, Harrow, Shrewsbury, Brighton, BIS), followed by IB (NIST, KIS, ISB) and American (ISB). Seoul tilts heavily American at SFS, KIS and YISS, with IB Diploma at KIS Jeju, Dwight Seoul and NLCS Jeju on the island campus. British curriculum is rarer in Seoul but represented at Dulwich.

For curriculum deep dives see the IB hub, British curriculum hub and American curriculum hub.

Neighbourhoods families pick

Bangkok families cluster in Sukhumvit (Soi 49 to 71 for Patana, NIST, KIS), Nichada Thani (ISB and the international compound), Bang Na (Bangkok Prep, Harrow), and Sathorn for newer central schools. A four-bedroom house with pool in Nichada runs THB 200,000 to THB 350,000 per month. Seoul international families pick Yongsan (YISS), Seongbuk for SFS, Pangyo and Bundang for KIS and Dwight, and Itaewon for proximity to embassies and the army base. A four-bedroom apartment in Pangyo or Itaewon runs KRW 6,000,000 to KRW 12,000,000 per month.

Lifestyle and climate

Bangkok is hot and humid year round, with a wet season from June to October. It is famously food-led, with a relaxed pace, easy weekend access to beaches and Southeast Asia, and one of Asia's most affordable luxury lifestyles. Seoul offers four distinct seasons, a much faster pace of life, cutting-edge urban infrastructure and the global cultural moment of K-pop, K-drama and Korean cinema. Winters are cold (down to minus 10 degrees Celsius), summers humid, and pollution from spring dust storms is a real issue.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose Bangkok if you want value, climate consistency, a broad school market and a relaxed expat pace. It is the stronger choice for families with younger children, dual-career couples and anyone wanting easier travel through Southeast Asia. Choose Seoul if your role is tech, manufacturing or media-adjacent, you value academic intensity and your children are heading to US universities. SFS and KIS graduate cohorts have consistently strong Ivy League and top-30 US placement rates, and the IB Diploma cohort at KIS Jeju has been one of Asia's strongest for five years running.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bangkok or Seoul cheaper for international school families in 2026?

Bangkok is significantly cheaper. Cost of living runs 40 to 50 percent lower than Seoul, and premium international school fees are roughly 20 to 30 percent lower at equivalent tier schools.

Which city has better international schools?

Both have strong flagships. Bangkok has more total choice, particularly across British curriculum. Seoul's top schools (SFS, KIS, Dwight) produce some of Asia's strongest US university outcomes.

Is the family visa easier in Bangkok or Seoul?

Bangkok is simpler. Non-Immigrant B and O visas with dependants are straightforward and renewable annually. Seoul D-8 (business) and D-7 (intra-company) routes are clear, but require more documentation, and the F-3 dependant visa is fully tied to the main applicant.

Are Seoul international schools really restricted to non-Korean families?

Most premium Seoul international schools require students to hold foreign passports or have spent significant time abroad. SFS, KIS, YISS and Dwight all enforce variations of this rule under Korean education policy. Families with mixed nationality children should check eligibility carefully.

Where do international school families live in each city?

Bangkok families cluster in Sukhumvit, Nichada Thani, Bang Na and Sathorn. Seoul families pick Yongsan, Seongbuk, Pangyo, Bundang and Itaewon, mostly close to their target school.
