Dubai is the cheaper and more polished city to live in for international school families, with a deeper market and regulated fees. Jakarta is dramatically cheaper on housing and daily costs, but its international school market is concentrated in only a handful of names. Both cities pay strong tax-free or low-tax salaries to attract corporate talent.
Schools landscape side by side
Dubai's market is regulated by KHDA and now numbers more than 220 private schools, of which around 32 are authorised IB World Schools and 74 follow the British curriculum. Flagships parents recognise include GEMS Wellington International, JESS Dubai, Dubai College, Repton Dubai, Dwight School Dubai and Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills. Capacity is generally good outside the most oversubscribed primary year groups and most families secure a place within four to eight weeks.
Jakarta has a smaller but very mature market with around 25 internationally accredited schools. The schools that dominate shortlists are Jakarta Intercultural School in Cilandak, the British School Jakarta in Bintaro, Australian Independent School and the New Zealand Independent School. JIS and BSJ are the heavyweights with full IB and IGCSE plus A Level pathways. Demand is steady but not acute, except for Year 7 and Year 12 entries at JIS and BSJ.

Fees and value for money
Dubai tuition sits in a wide band. Premium schools such as JESS, Dubai College, Dwight and Repton publish AED 85,000 to 115,000 for upper secondary, with mid-tier British schools such as GEMS Wellington and Kings' Al Barsha landing AED 50,000 to 80,000. KHDA caps annual fee increases against inspection ratings, which gives parents budget visibility that most other cities do not offer. See our Dubai fees guide for the all-in load.
Jakarta is comparable on tuition once you focus on the top tier. JIS publishes 2026 senior fees in the IDR 380 to 480 million range (about USD 24,000 to 31,000), BSJ slightly below. Add a one-off capital fee of IDR 50 to 100 million on entry, plus transport, registration and exam fees. All-in cost per child at JIS or BSJ tracks roughly USD 32,000 to 42,000 per year. Use the cost calculator to model a five year all-in number.
Curriculum availability
Both cities cover the global big four: IB, British (IGCSE and A Level), American (AP and SAT) and Indian CBSE in Dubai. Jakarta adds Australian senior secondary through AIS. Dubai has a clear British and IB bias by school count; Jakarta tilts American and British. The IB Diploma remains the safest portable credential in either city for families on rotation.

Neighbourhoods families pick
In Dubai, international school families cluster in Arabian Ranches, Dubai Hills Estate, Jumeirah, Mirdif, The Springs and Al Barsha. School-bus routes are dense and a four-bedroom villa with a garden runs USD 4,000 to 6,500 per month, a fraction of similar space in many Asian capitals.
In Jakarta, expat families pick Pondok Indah, Kemang, Cipete and Senopati for JIS, and Bintaro for BSJ. South Jakarta dominates the family map. A four-bedroom house with garden and pool in Pondok Indah runs USD 3,500 to 6,000 per month, with Kemang slightly cheaper. Traffic is the single biggest factor in choosing neighbourhood; most families pick within 20 minutes of school.
Lifestyle and climate
Dubai is hot and dry for eight months, with summer peaks above 45 degrees Celsius that push family life indoors from June to early September. Winter is the reward, with beach weekends, desert trips and outdoor sport. Jakarta is hot and humid year round, around 27 to 33 degrees Celsius, with daily afternoon storms during the wetter half of the year. Jakarta's traffic and air quality are real considerations. Dubai has the world's busiest international airport for direct routes; Jakarta's Soekarno Hatta is improving but international connections are narrower.
Verdict: who picks which city
Choose Dubai if you want a polished modern city, deep school choice across budgets, regulated fees and easy global connectivity. It also suits families with younger children who prioritise extracurricular range and large campuses.
Choose Jakarta if your role is Indonesia-anchored and you can buy back time by paying for housing close to JIS or BSJ. It is the stronger city for families who want a strong American or British academic core inside a culturally rich, family-friendly expat community at lower cost of living.
Most families we work with run both cities through the cost calculator before they commit. The five year all-in delta between similar schools and similar housing is usually USD 30,000 to 70,000 in Jakarta's favour, but Dubai pulls ahead on lifestyle infrastructure and connectivity.
Frequently asked questions
