Hong Kong and Bangkok serve different family use cases. Hong Kong is a fast, finance-led city with high-pressure schools and tight housing. Bangkok is a low-cost, sprawling Asian capital with some of the best IB outcomes in Southeast Asia and unusually generous family space. Most families we work with pick Hong Kong for career, Bangkok for quality of family life and headroom in the budget.

Schools landscape side by side

Hong Kong has around 50 international schools serving 40,000 students. Shortlists almost always include the ESF network, Harrow Hong Kong, Kellett, Hong Kong International School and Chinese International School. Premium schools usually expect a corporate debenture or capital certificate, often HKD 300,000 to HKD 800,000, and Year 7 and Year 12 lists run six to twelve months in popular catchments.

Bangkok runs more than 200 international schools, the largest market in Southeast Asia. The flagship names are Bangkok Patana, NIST International School, ISB, Harrow Bangkok, Shrewsbury International, KIS International and Brighton College Bangkok. NIST leads the IB league with a 37-point average in 2025; Patana posts a consistent 35-point average at scale.

Fees and value for money

Hong Kong fees run HKD 90,000 to 330,000 across the ESF and premium tiers, roughly USD 11,500 to USD 42,000. Layer in 20 to 30 percent for transport, debentures and capital levies to reach the real outlay.

Bangkok flagship schools sit at THB 800,000 to 1,200,000 per year for senior school, roughly USD 22,000 to 33,000, with capital fees of THB 250,000 to 700,000 at first enrolment. Equivalent IB or British provision in Bangkok costs about 30 to 40 percent less than in Hong Kong, and housing costs even less than that on a like-for-like family-home basis. Use the cost calculator to model a five-year number.

Curriculum availability

Both cities deliver IB Diploma, IGCSE and A Level, and AP through the right school. Bangkok is unusually deep on the IB Diploma, with three schools regularly publishing 35-plus point averages. Hong Kong's ESF schools run a strong IB programme too, and the British heritage schools deliver the full A Level route. See the IB hub for the portable middle path.

Neighbourhoods families pick

Hong Kong families cluster on Hong Kong Island for Mid-Levels, Pok Fu Lam and Repulse Bay, in Discovery Bay on Lantau, and in Sai Kung or Clear Water Bay for more space. A three-bedroom flat near a major school runs HKD 55,000 to HKD 95,000 per month.

Bangkok families pick Sukhumvit corridors such as Phrom Phong, Thong Lor and Ekkamai for Bangkok Patana and NIST shuttle routes, Sathorn for central schools and Brighton College Bangkok, and the closed Nichada Thani compound on Bangkok's outskirts for ISB. A three-bedroom condo on central Sukhumvit runs THB 80,000 to 180,000 per month, with much more living space than the Hong Kong equivalent.

Lifestyle and climate

Hong Kong is subtropical with hot humid summers, cool dry winters and a typhoon season. The compensation is excellent public transport, hiking, and easy weekend travel into mainland China and Southeast Asia. Bangkok is tropical year round with a defined rainy season. Daily life is slower and cheaper, with abundant household help and a thriving food scene. Air quality in Bangkok varies through the year and is a real-life factor for asthma families.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose Hong Kong if your career and salary justify the cost and you want tight access to the Asian finance circuit. Choose Bangkok for stronger family economics, deeper IB outcomes per dollar, and a softer daily rhythm. Many families we advise move from Hong Kong to Bangkok mid-posting because the school outcomes hold up at a fraction of the cost. Walk the cities through the school finder quiz to short-list schools in both before deciding.
