Lisbon's market is small but well-formed, dominated by a handful of long-established names. Sydney's market is much larger, with private and bilingual options at every price point and a strong Australian state school option as a credible fallback.

Schools landscape side by side

Lisbon is anchored by St Julian's School (founded 1932, IB and British), Carlucci American International School of Lisbon (CAISL, American and IB), TASIS Portugal, Park International School and the Lycee Francais Charles Lepierre. The Portuguese international school PaRK is the local bilingual heavyweight. Demand from Golden Visa families and remote-working professionals has tightened admissions at St Julian's and CAISL, which now hold waiting lists of nine to fifteen months. See the Lisbon schools hub.

Sydney is anchored by International Grammar School (IGS) in Ultimo, offering bilingual education in English plus French, Italian, German, Spanish or Japanese, Reddam House in Woollahra (IB and HSC), and the historic Sydney private schools: Scots, Kings, Sydney Grammar, SCEGGS Darlinghurst and Cranbrook. Australian state schools deliver strong English-medium education at near-zero cost for permanent residents but are not classed as international. See the Sydney schools hub.

Fees and value for money

Lisbon's fees are the cheapest of any Western European capital. CAISL runs EUR 11,716 to 22,736 across the year groups, St Julian's runs EUR 12,384 to 29,097, TASIS Portugal sits around EUR 16,000 to 24,000, and Park International School around EUR 11,000 to 18,000. Add a EUR 2,000 to 4,000 enrolment fee in year one and EUR 1,500 to 2,500 for bus, lunch and trips. Families on the D7 or Golden Visa typically self-fund and find Lisbon excellent value. The fees explorer has the distribution.

Sydney is much pricier. International Grammar School publishes AUD 22,000 to 34,000 across junior and senior years. Reddam House runs AUD 30,000 to 45,000. Top-tier private schools (Sydney Grammar, Scots, Kings, SCEGGS) sit between AUD 35,000 and 45,000 at senior level. Add a one-off enrolment fee of AUD 2,000 to 5,000, uniforms at AUD 1,500 to 3,000 in year one, plus external IB or HSC exam fees. Public schools are functionally free for permanent residents.

Curriculum availability

Lisbon offers IB, American High School Diploma, British IGCSE and A Level, and the Portuguese national curriculum through PaRK. St Julian's runs both IB Diploma and British (IGCSE and A Level), the only Lisbon school offering both pathways under one roof. CAISL runs IB Diploma alongside the US Diploma. Portuguese is increasingly offered as a host-country language for families settling long term.

Sydney offers the Australian HSC, IB Diploma at a small number of schools (Reddam House, MLC School, St Andrew's Cathedral School), IGCSE and A Level at international schools, plus bilingual programmes at IGS. The Australian HSC is well-respected globally but less portable than the IB Diploma, so most internationally mobile families lean IB or British. The IB hub covers cross-city comparisons.

Neighbourhoods families pick

In Lisbon international families cluster on the Estoril coast: Carcavelos for St Julian's, Sintra for CAISL, Cascais for Park and TASIS. Central Lisbon (Lapa, Estrela, Principe Real) hosts families who want city life but means a daily school bus to the coast. A three-bedroom house in Carcavelos or Estoril runs EUR 2,500 to EUR 4,800 per month, around half of Sydney equivalents.

In Sydney international families pick the Eastern Suburbs (Vaucluse, Bellevue Hill, Double Bay) for Reddam House and the historic privates, the Inner West (Glebe, Ultimo, Annandale) for IGS, the Lower North Shore (Mosman, Neutral Bay, Cremorne) for the Northern beaches private system, and the Northern Beaches proper for Pittwater House and Mater Maria. A three-bedroom apartment in Mosman runs AUD 4,500 to AUD 8,000 per month, well above Lisbon equivalents.

Lifestyle and climate

Lisbon runs a mild Mediterranean climate, 8 to 15 in winter and 18 to 28 in summer, with very low humidity and 290 days of sun per year. Family life leans on the Atlantic coast, surf schools at Carcavelos and Cascais, weekend trips to the Algarve, and a relaxed pace that suits younger children. Sydney runs subtropical: 8 to 17 in winter, 19 to 26 in summer, with high humidity January to February and excellent beach access at Bondi, Coogee, Manly and the Northern Beaches. Air quality, healthcare and personal safety are excellent in both cities.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose Lisbon if you want the most affordable Western European hub for an internationally mobile family. The combination of cheap excellent schools, Golden Visa or D7 pathway, low cost of living and Atlantic climate is hard to match. Most families self-fund schooling rather than rely on a corporate package.

Choose Sydney if you want a high-income, English-speaking Pacific base with world-class private schools and a path to permanent residency. Total cost is much higher than Lisbon but the city's premium private system is genuinely strong, and the Australian state system is a credible fallback for permanent residents.

Frequently asked questions

Is Lisbon or Sydney cheaper for international school families in 2026?

Lisbon is dramatically cheaper. Numbeo's May 2026 comparison puts Sydney roughly 60 to 80 percent above Lisbon on rent and groceries. School fees at the top end are around 30 to 40 percent lower in Lisbon. The cost gap is the single largest in any comparison on this site.

Which city has stronger international schools?

Sydney has more schools, deeper heritage and broader choice, particularly at the premium private tier. Lisbon offers fewer schools but excellent quality at the top: St Julian's and CAISL both deliver strong IB Diploma outcomes. For pure choice, Sydney; for value, Lisbon.

Is the family visa easier in Lisbon or Sydney?

Lisbon is materially easier for self-funded families through the D7 passive income or Golden Visa routes. Sydney's skilled and employer-sponsored visas (Subclass 482, 186, 189) require professional sponsorship and a points test, and processing times of 16 to 28 weeks are common.

How does the climate compare for families?

Both are mild coastal climates. Lisbon is Mediterranean, 8 to 28 across the year with low humidity and very sunny weather. Sydney is subtropical, 8 to 26 with high summer humidity and famous beach culture. Both run year-round outdoor sport easily.
