Schools landscape side by side

Mumbai has roughly 35 international schools serving an expat and high-net-worth Indian population. The shortlist parents recognise begins with Dhirubhai Ambani International School (DAIS) and Oberoi International School in Goregaon and BKC, both of which post some of the strongest IB Diploma results in Asia. Ecole Mondiale World School in Juhu and the American School of Bombay (ASB) in BKC round out the top tier. Below that, Aditya Birla World Academy, Bombay International School and JBCN serve mid-budget families. Most premium schools cap classes at 22 and run waitlists of 6 to 18 months for Year 1 entry.

Brussels punches above its weight on school count thanks to the EU institutions and NATO. Brussels families typically shortlist the International School of Brussels (ISB) in Watermael-Boitsfort, the British School of Brussels (BSB) in Tervuren and St John's International School in Waterloo. Add Brussels American School, BEPS International, Le Verseau and the network of European Schools that serve EU staff at fees ranging from token to fully subsidised. ISB and BSB combined dominate Anglophone family demand; both have generally good capacity outside Year 7 and Year 12.

Fees and value for money

Mumbai is the value city. Premium IB schools such as DAIS, Oberoi and Ecole Mondiale charge INR 7,00,000 to 18,00,000 per year for senior school, equivalent to USD 8,500 to 22,000. Capital fees and one-off enrolment levies typically add INR 2,00,000 to 5,00,000 in Year 1. Even at the top of the market, total cost remains a fraction of comparable Brussels schools. See the global fees benchmark for the full comparison.

Brussels sits in the high European band. ISB publishes 2025 to 2026 tuition between EUR 22,590 and EUR 49,714 across age groups, with the Diploma years at the top of that range. BSB is around EUR 22,000 to EUR 33,000 and BEPS roughly EUR 16,000 to EUR 24,000. The European Schools are the wildcard: EU institution staff pay almost nothing, while Category III families (private employers) pay around EUR 7,000 to EUR 11,000, which makes Brussels the cheapest EU capital for some families and one of the most expensive for others.

Curriculum availability

Mumbai's English-medium private market is dominated by IB and IGCSE alongside the stronger Indian boards (ICSE and CBSE International). The IB Diploma is the safest credential for onward university routes outside India. Brussels offers all four big curricula plus the European Baccalaureate via the European Schools network, which is well recognised across Europe but less portable to North America. See our IB hub if portability is your priority.

Neighbourhoods families pick

Mumbai families cluster in three school catchments: Bandra and BKC (close to ASB and Oberoi BKC), Powai (Hiranandani Gardens, near Oberoi Goregaon by car), and Juhu (Ecole Mondiale, JBCN). A three-bedroom apartment in these zones runs INR 2,50,000 to 6,00,000 per month (USD 3,000 to 7,200), with security, parking and a building gym included. In Brussels, families pick Tervuren and Sterrebeek for BSB, Watermael-Boitsfort and Uccle for ISB, Waterloo for St John's and Woluwe-Saint-Pierre for European Schools families. A four-bedroom house with garden runs EUR 2,800 to 5,200 per month.

Lifestyle and climate

Mumbai is hot, humid and intense. Monsoon (June to September) reshapes daily life and adds an extra hour to every commute. Pollution is a real factor October to March. Weekends are spent at clubs, beaches further south or hill stations. Brussels is mild and grey: 7 to 22 degrees Celsius year round, plenty of rain, beautiful summers. Safety, green space and walkability are markedly higher than Mumbai. Brussels also offers low-friction weekend access to Paris, Amsterdam, London and the German countryside by train.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose Mumbai if your role pays in hard currency and you want elite IB outcomes at a fraction of European cost, with domestic help, club life and short flights across South Asia.

Choose Brussels if you value safety, green space, a temperate climate and easy weekend travel across Europe, and if your employer covers the European school fee load.

Frequently asked questions

Is Mumbai or Brussels cheaper for international school families in 2026?

Mumbai is much cheaper on every line item. Premium school fees are 40 to 60 percent lower, housing in family catchments is 30 to 50 percent lower, and groceries are 60 percent lower. Brussels only wins on cost if you qualify for European School Category I fees as an EU institution employee.

Which city has stronger IB Diploma results?

Both produce excellent IB outcomes. DAIS Mumbai and Oberoi International routinely average above 38 points, comparable with the strongest Brussels schools including ISB. School fit and student profile matter more than city averages here.

Is the family visa easier in Mumbai or Brussels?

Brussels is easier for EU passport holders, who need no visa at all. For non-EU families, the Type D long-stay visa is straightforward when sponsored by an EU based employer. India requires a sponsored employment visa plus dependent X visas, which take 4 to 8 weeks.

How long does the school admissions process take in each city?

Mumbai's top three IB schools commonly run 6 to 18 month waiting lists for Year 1 and Year 7. Brussels' ISB, BSB and St John's process applications within 6 to 12 weeks outside peak intake; European Schools have a separate centralised process.

Where do most international school families live in each city?

Mumbai expat families pick Bandra, BKC, Powai and Juhu. Brussels families cluster in Tervuren and Sterrebeek (for BSB), Watermael-Boitsfort and Uccle (for ISB) and Waterloo (for St John's).
