Primary fee range at a glance

The single largest change to London primary fees has been the application of 20% VAT on private and international school tuition from 1 January 2025. Most schools absorbed part of the rate and passed the rest on, so primary families have seen net increases well above normal inflation. A primary place that cost around GBP 22,000 before VAT now typically sits closer to GBP 26,000 to 27,000, and the value gap between mid and premium primaries has narrowed. Figures below are 2026 bands inclusive of VAT and tie to our city fees report; primary tuition sits at the lower end of each whole school tier.

What drives the cost

London primary fees are driven by three forces. The first is VAT: since January 2025 a fifth of headline tuition is tax, and although schools cushioned the blow with reserves and efficiency savings, the full effect on primary families is still working through and is likely to be clearer by 2027. The second is property and staffing cost in a high-wage capital, which falls hardest on the central international schools that families relocating to London most often shortlist. The third is curriculum: pure international primaries running the IB Primary Years Programme or an American elementary curriculum tend to price above smaller British prep departments because of smaller class sizes and English-as-an-additional-language support built in for arriving families.

Stripping out the VAT shock, underlying London fee inflation runs about 5.5% a year, so a primary place that looks affordable on day one should be modelled forward across the whole of a child's primary years rather than judged on the reception figure alone.

Hidden costs beyond tuition

Headline tuition is only part of the bill. London extras typically add 8 to 14% on top. The largest line items at primary level are the acceptance deposit of GBP 1,000 to 3,500, which is frequently non-refundable, registration of GBP 250 to 500 per application, uniform of GBP 600 to 1,200 with the heaviest spend in the first year, and trips and enrichment that can reach GBP 800 to 3,500 depending on the school. Books and stationery add GBP 200 to 450. Unlike many overseas markets, most central London schools do not run a subsidised bus network, so families either pay for private transport or factor commute into where they live.

FAQ

How much is primary international school in London? Primary international school fees in London run from about GBP 18,000 a year at smaller independents to GBP 30,000 to 38,000 at the premium international schools, inclusive of the 20% VAT applied since January 2025. Most families also pay 8 to 14% on top in registration, deposit, uniform and trips.

Does VAT apply to primary school fees in London? Yes. From 1 January 2025 a 20% VAT rate applies to private and international school tuition in the UK, including primary years. Schools absorbed part of the rate, so net fee increases for most families landed around 12 to 16% rather than the full 20%.

Which London schools offer international primary education? Pure international primaries include Southbank International, The American School in London, ICS London, ISL London and the ACS International campuses at Cobham, Egham and Hillingdon. Many selective British prep schools also run strong primary departments at comparable fees.

Is the acceptance deposit refundable? Usually not. London schools commonly charge an acceptance deposit of GBP 1,000 to 3,500 that is non-refundable, although some credit it against the first term of fees. Always confirm the refund terms in writing before paying.

How fast are London primary fees rising? Underlying fee inflation runs about 5.5% a year before tax. With VAT layered on top, 2025 to 2026 saw nominal increases of 12 to 18% at many schools, so model fees forward across all primary years rather than the reception figure alone.
