The Riyadh IB landscape

Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 reform programme has driven significant expansion of international schooling capacity in Riyadh from 2020 onwards, particularly within the King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) and surrounding upscale suburbs. American International School Riyadh (ARIS) is the long-established premium American school offering AP and IB Diploma. British International School Riyadh (BIS Riyadh) primarily delivers IGCSE/A-Level but offers IB Diploma as alternative pathway. Diplomatic-quarter schools and KFUPM-foundation schools complete the IB tier. Cohort sizes are smaller than Dubai equivalents but quality is competitive.

What didn't make the list

Several Riyadh schools have launched IB Diploma since 2022 but cohort outcomes data is insufficient to warrant ranking. King Fahd University-foundation schools and several Vision 2030-funded new entrants are worth monitoring; cohort track records will mature over the next 2-3 years.

The Vision 2030 expansion factor

Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 has driven substantial international schooling capacity expansion in Riyadh, with several new IB-accredited schools opening 2022-2025. Sukoon International, World Academy Riyadh and several KAFD-area new entrants are growing IB cohorts. Capacity is comfortable; pressure on premium tier (ARIS, BIS Riyadh) has eased relative to the pre-2020 environment.

IB vs. American AP in Riyadh

Both ARIS and several Riyadh schools offer AP alongside IB. For US-bound families, AP is often the more direct pathway; for IB-committed families, IB Diploma travels universally. ARIS uniquely offers both pathways at strong scale.

Saudi national restrictions

Saudi nationals face some restrictions on attending pure international schools. most international schools require at least one expatriate parent. Several "international" curriculum-track schools (Manarat, Yamamah, certain bilingual schools) explicitly accept Saudi nationals and offer IB Diploma alongside Saudi national curriculum. Worth investigating for Saudi-national families seeking IB pathway.

Fee context

Premium IB places at ARIS or BIS Riyadh cost SAR 80,000-115,000 per year (USD 21,000-30,500). Plus capital/registration fees. See our full Riyadh school fees report.
