The London budget tier defined
For this list "cheapest" means London-area schools with annual fees below GBP 26,000 (post-VAT, USD ~32,500), delivering British, IB or American curricula in English. We exclude state schools (which are free to UK-domiciled families and accept some non-UK families on a fee-paying basis) and grammar schools (free to UK-domiciled families). The eight options below are accessible to international families requiring fee-paying placements.
The 8 cheapest credible options
DLD College London
Central London sixth-form-focused independent. Strong A-Level and IB Diploma cohorts. Particularly suited to international families wanting central location for sixth-form only. Smaller scale than the major independents.
St Helen's College
Modest-fee independent prep school in west London. Strong academic foundation. Particularly worth considering for families relocating to west London for shorter time horizons. Small scale, family atmosphere.
The London International Academy
Small central London international school. IGCSE and A-Level pathway. Particularly suited to international families with shorter London time horizons. Family atmosphere; small cohort sizes.
Hampton Court House
Distinctive south-west London independent with a more progressive academic culture. Strong academic outcomes. Smaller scale than the major independents. Good fit for families seeking a less traditional independent school environment.
The London Christian School
Christian-foundation independent with notably modest fees by central-London standards. Smaller scale. Strong family community. Particularly worth considering for families willing to align with a Christian-foundation school in exchange for lower fees.
Tashbar of Edgware
Jewish-faith independent with strong academic outcomes and modest fees. Best for families aligned with a Jewish-faith environment. Specific demographic but worth listing for completeness.
Halcyon London International School
Newer central London IB-only international school. Top of our budget tier on fee. Modern campus. Smaller cohort means narrower sixth-form subject choice. Particularly worth considering for families wanting an IB-only pathway in central London at lower fees than ACS or Southbank.
Lyceum Kennedy French American School
Bilingual French-English curriculum with IB option for upper years. Modest fees by London standards for a bilingual programme. Worth considering for francophone or bilingual families.
What you trade off
Below GBP 26,000 in post-VAT London you trade off: facilities depth (no separate art block, smaller science labs, modest sport facilities), university counselling investment, sixth-form subject breadth (often 12-15 A-Level subjects vs. 22-26 at premium), and depth of music/drama provision. SEN provision varies. some smaller schools deliver excellent SEN despite lower fees.
Don't forget the state and grammar options
For UK-domiciled families and those eligible for state school placement (most expat families with leave to remain or permanent residency), state secondaries in good catchments are free and many deliver outcomes comparable to mid-tier independents. Grammar schools (selective state) in outer London (Sutton, Bexley, Bromley) deliver outcomes competitive with top independents. Worth a serious look before committing to fee-paying.
The VAT effect
The 2025 introduction of 20% VAT on private school fees pushed many borderline families out of independent education. The schools listed here represent the most accessible fee tier post-VAT. See our full London fees report for the broader picture.
