The hidden extras
Total cost-of-place adds 18-22% to headline fees in Abu Dhabi, similar to Dubai. Largest line items: registration and re-registration deposits (AED 500-3,000. modest given ADEK regulation), transport (AED 6,500-12,000 per year. important given Abu Dhabi distances from many residential zones to school clusters on Yas, Saadiyat or Reem), uniform (AED 1,200-2,800), iPad/laptop programmes (AED 3,500-6,500), exam entries (AED 4,000-7,500 in IGCSE/A-Level/IB years), residential trips (AED 2,500-7,500), termly building/activity fund contributions.
ADEK rating context
ADEK rates schools on a five-tier system (Outstanding, Very Good, Good, Acceptable, Weak. similar to Dubai's KHDA). The number of Outstanding-rated schools in Abu Dhabi has grown steadily as Aldar Academies, Cranleigh, Brighton College and others have matured. Premium schools cluster in the Outstanding and Very Good tiers; mid-tier mostly Good or Very Good.
Year-on-year fee inflation
Abu Dhabi school fees rose an average of 5.7% across 2025-26, slightly below Dubai's 6.4%. ADEK regulates maximum fee increases tied to school rating: Outstanding-rated schools can apply for higher increases, Acceptable-rated schools have caps. This produces a more measured fee inflation environment than Dubai. Budget at least 5.5-6% annual fee inflation in your forward planning.
Abu Dhabi vs. Dubai: a working comparison
A premium British curriculum place at Cranleigh Abu Dhabi runs about AED 75,000-90,000 per year. The Dubai College equivalent costs AED 80,000-105,000. Abu Dhabi is roughly 10-15% cheaper at the premium tier. The trade-off is school choice (Dubai has materially more options), and the catchment realities for residents of either emirate.
Sibling discounts
Most Abu Dhabi school groups offer 5-10% off second and subsequent siblings. Aldar Academies (the largest local operator) runs a tiered programme. Some independents offer no formal sibling discount. See our sibling discount table.
Currency exposure
AED is pegged to USD. USD-paid families have no currency risk; GBP and EUR-paid families carry full currency risk. Same dynamics as Dubai.
