How many secondary schools in Hong Kong
Hong Kong has roughly 45 international secondary schools that take students through to a recognised external qualification. Of those, about 30 run a full sixth form to age 18 on the same campus, while the remainder finish at the end of Year 11 or Grade 10 and feed senior students to sibling sixth forms. ESF accounts for five through schools at secondary level, including Island School, South Island School, West Island School, Sha Tin College and King George V School.
The independent secondary cluster is led by Chinese International School, Hong Kong International School, German Swiss International School, Canadian International School, Harrow International, Renaissance College, Australian International, Yew Chung and Discovery College. New entrants since 2020 such as Malvern College Hong Kong have added British senior school capacity in Tseung Kwan O.
Secondary capacity per international child is roughly 15 percent tighter than primary capacity, particularly in Years 7 and 12, the two most competitive entry points. Most Tier 1 secondaries fill their Year 7 cohort with internal progressions from their feeder primaries, leaving only single-digit external places.
Fees and the sixth form tiers
Secondary tuition divides into three tiers. The value tier sits at HK$170,000 to HK$210,000 a year and is dominated by the five ESF secondaries plus a handful of newer mid-market schools. The mid tier, HK$210,000 to HK$270,000, captures Canadian International, Renaissance College, Discovery College, Yew Chung, Australian International and Malvern College. The premium tier, HK$270,000 to HK$320,000, includes the senior years at Chinese International School, Hong Kong International School, German Swiss, Harrow and Kellett.
The all-in cost of a Hong Kong sixth form is significantly higher than headline tuition suggests. Most premium schools also collect a debenture or capital certificate, typically refundable when your child leaves, ranging from HK$300,000 to HK$1.5 million per family. Examination entry fees for IB Diploma, A Level and AP add HK$15,000 to HK$22,000 across the two-year senior cycle. Residential trips, university counselling fees and Duke of Edinburgh expeditions push the all-in commitment a further 8 to 12 percent above tuition. Illustrative example schools
The five schools below are illustrative, not a ranking. Each has a long secondary record, a stable sixth form outcome history and a clear identity in the market.
Hong Kong International School in Tai Tam is the dominant US-pathway secondary in the territory, serving a strong American and Asian-American cohort with AP, SAT and a Christian community ethos. The senior years feed heavily into Ivy League and other US selective universities.
Chinese International School in Braemar Hill runs the IB Middle Years and Diploma Programme alongside true bilingual Mandarin-English instruction at lower years. CIS sixth form Diploma cohorts consistently average above 38 points.
Harrow International School Hong Kong in Tuen Mun delivers the English national curriculum from Year 7, leading to IGCSE then A Level. Strong boarding capacity, particularly for the Greater Bay Area regional intake.
ESF West Island School in Pok Fu Lam runs the MYP and IB Diploma with a notably mixed nationality cohort. It is the most accessible Tier 1 sixth form by fee structure.
Renaissance College in Ma On Shan, also ESF-managed, runs the full IB continuum and serves the New Territories sixth form market. For deeper rankings see our editorial best IB schools in Hong Kong analysis.
Qualifications: IB, A Level and AP
Hong Kong sixth form provision breaks down roughly as follows. About 60 percent of senior school cohorts take the IB Diploma. Around 25 percent take A Level, concentrated at Harrow, Kellett, Nord Anglia International, Malvern College Hong Kong and a small number of through schools that retain A Level alongside IB. Around 12 percent take the US AP diploma, anchored at HKIS, Hong Kong Academy and the American International School. The remainder is the German Abitur at German Swiss International School plus a tiny French Baccalaureate cohort at the French International School. Some schools, notably West Island School and Harrow, offer A Level and IB Diploma in parallel.
Where senior school families live
Senior school families spread more widely than primary families because teenagers travel further to school. The Mid-Levels, the Peak and Pok Fu Lam anchor families at Island School, West Island School, German Swiss and CIS. Tai Tam and Repulse Bay are the heartland of HKIS senior school families and a chunk of the Hong Kong Academy intake. Discovery Bay on Lantau supports Discovery College. The New Territories around Sai Kung, Clearwater Bay and Ma On Shan support Renaissance College, ICS Hong Kong and Sha Tin College. Tuen Mun has become a Harrow boarding catchment, with day pupils typically based in West Kowloon or Yuen Long.
Admissions calendar
Year 7 main intake at most schools opens in September the year before, closing November to December. Year 12 sixth form intake opens January or February. Late applicants are reviewed on a rolling basis, but the desirable sixth form combinations of subjects fill quickly. For Year 12 entry, your child typically needs predicted IGCSE grades, two academic references and a subject-specific interview. Transfers after October of Year 12 are generally not accepted because Diploma and A Level subjects are already underway.
