The LFKL pathway
Lycee Francais de Kuala Lumpur is the only AEFE-homologated French school in Malaysia. The school sits on a single campus in Mont Kiara and delivers the full French national programme from petite section in maternelle through to terminale, ending in the French baccalaureate. Cohorts are small relative to international schools in the city, with class sizes typically capped at 24 in primary and 22 in college and lycee.
LFKL's AEFE accreditation means children can transfer directly into any other French school worldwide, whether that is in France, Brussels, Singapore or anywhere else in the network of 600-plus AEFE schools. The school also runs an OIB option, the Option Internationale du Baccalaureat, which is a bilingual French and English variant of the baccalaureate. Graduates have a dual-qualification advantage when applying to UK, US and Australian universities alongside French institutions and grandes ecoles.
The cluster is small but consequential. There is no second AEFE school in Malaysia, which means LFKL serves the entire francophone community in the Klang Valley, from petits to lyceens. For curriculum framework see the French curriculum hub; for sibling KL pathways see the KL IB hub and KL British hub.
Fees and AEFE bursaries
LFKL fees are substantially lower than the premium British or American schools in Kuala Lumpur, reflecting the AEFE network's role as a public service for French citizens abroad. For the 2025 to 2026 academic year, maternelle fees sit around $7,200, primary classes range from $8,400 to $9,600, college years run $10,800 to $11,800, and the lycee terminale year reaches roughly $13,800. Capital levies, trips, lunch and lycee exam registration add another 15 to 20 percent.
French passport holders may apply for AEFE bursaries through the French consulate in Kuala Lumpur, with means-tested support covering between 20 and 100 percent of tuition. The application is annual and based on the previous year's family revenue declared to French tax authorities. Non-French-passport families are not eligible for bursaries but pay the same headline tuition. Alternatives for French families
For families who decide LFKL is not the right fit, the most common alternative path is an English-medium international school that supports French as a strong second language. Garden International School in Mont Kiara runs French alongside Spanish, Mandarin and other languages from primary upwards. Mont'Kiara International School and Fairview International School support French at IGCSE and IB Diploma levels. These pathways do not deliver the French national programme, but they keep written and spoken French alive for families intending to repatriate, while exposing children to an internationally portable English-medium qualification.
A second alternative is the CNED, the French distance learning organisation. Some families based outside Mont Kiara enrol their children in an English-medium school for academic instruction and run the French national programme in parallel through CNED at home. This is demanding for parents but ensures repatriation continuity. The CNED pathway is also used by families on shorter rotations to KL who plan to return to France within three years.
Where French families live in KL
French families in Kuala Lumpur cluster heavily in Mont Kiara for proximity to LFKL, which sits in the heart of the expat residential corridor. Walk-to-school distance is achievable for families in Mont Kiara Plaza Damas, the Solaris developments and the Hartamas Heights cluster. Sri Hartamas is the second-most popular area, with a short school bus run and a long-established French boulangerie and restaurant scene around the Plaza Damas. A smaller cohort lives in Bangsar or Damansara Heights and accepts a 25 to 35 minute commute to LFKL each morning, in exchange for greater social variety.
The French expat community in Kuala Lumpur numbers around 3,500 registered citizens at the French consulate, concentrated in oil and gas, hospitality, luxury retail and the Airbus regional supply chain. Admissions calendar
LFKL follows the French academic year, running September to early July. Applications for September 2026 opened in October 2025, with the priority enrolment window for current AEFE network transfers closing in January 2026 and the open enrolment window for new families typically running through to May 2026 subject to availability. The most oversubscribed levels are CP (the start of primary, age 6) and 6eme (the start of college, age 11), where waiting lists can run six to twelve months at peak.
For families relocating mid-year, applications are accepted on a rolling basis. The school is generally able to accommodate moves at the start of each term, with the most movement between trimester two and three.
