How many IB schools in Kuala Lumpur
Kuala Lumpur currently lists 19 authorised IB World Schools with the International Baccalaureate Organization, the largest IB cluster in Malaysia by a wide margin. Penang, Johor and Cyberjaya each carry only a handful between them. About 11 of the 19 KL schools offer the full IB Diploma at sixth form. The others run PYP and MYP only, with secondary cohorts transitioning to IGCSE and A Level or the Cambridge ICE pathway.
The IB community in Kuala Lumpur is older than most Southeast Asian capitals would suggest. The International School of Kuala Lumpur has run the Diploma Programme since 1980, Mont'Kiara International School since the mid-1990s, and Fairview International was the first Malaysian school authorised across all four IB programmes including the Career-related Programme. The result is a mature ecosystem where families can move between schools without a curriculum mismatch.

Fees and the KL tiers
IB tuition in Kuala Lumpur is much more affordable than in Singapore, Hong Kong or the Gulf. The value tier, $7,800 to $11,200 a year for secondary IB, covers Fairview International School Kuala Lumpur, Sayfol International School and the smaller IB providers in Petaling Jaya. The mid tier, $11,500 to $17,500, captures most established names including IGB International, Garden International, Cempaka International and ELC International School. The premium tier, $17,800 to $24,600, covers Mont'Kiara International School, the International School of Kuala Lumpur and Nexus International School Putrajaya.
Published tuition is not the all-in cost. Add roughly 20 to 28 percent for capital levies, transport, books, IB exam fees and trips. A $16,000 secondary tuition fee typically settles around $20,000 once everything is paid. Our dedicated Kuala Lumpur fees guide shows the loading mathematics by tier. Illustrative example schools
The five schools below are illustrative, not a ranking. Each has a long IB record, a strong reputation and a clear identity in the Klang Valley market.
Mont'Kiara International School in Mont Kiara is the city's flagship American-heritage IB school, running the full PYP, MYP and DP continuum. Cohorts of 1,500-plus students. May 2025 Diploma average above 36 points.
International School of Kuala Lumpur in Ampang Hilir is the most academically selective IB option in Malaysia, with the Diploma Programme dating back to 1980. Smaller cohorts, strong US university destinations and one of the highest IB averages in Southeast Asia.
IGB International School in Sierramas is a younger entrant that has rapidly built a reputation, running PYP, MYP and DP. Strong sports facilities and one of the cleanest IB Diploma score trajectories of any Malaysian school.
Garden International School in Mont Kiara is the British-heritage alternative for IB families, running A Level alongside the IB Diploma at sixth form. The largest international school in Malaysia by enrolment.
Fairview International School in Wangsa Maju is the original Malaysian IB school, authorised across all four IB programmes including the Career-related Programme. Multiple Klang Valley campuses, broad ability intake.
Where IB families live
IB families in Kuala Lumpur cluster around four areas. Mont Kiara and Sri Hartamas for proximity to Mont'Kiara International and Garden International, the densest expat residential corridor in the city. Ampang Hilir and U-Thant for ISKL, the embassy belt with the longest expat history. Sierramas, Bukit Utama and Damansara Heights for IGB International and the western Klang Valley. Cyberjaya and Putrajaya for Nexus International, a 35 minute commute from central KL on the ELITE highway, popular with families balancing affordability and IB continuity.
School transport is widely available across the Klang Valley but congestion on the Penchala Link, Sprint Highway and Jalan Tun Razak adds 25 to 40 minutes at peak. Most IB families pick a residential area within a 35 minute drive of their chosen school. The best schools guide includes more on neighbourhood trade-offs.
Admissions calendar
Most Kuala Lumpur IB schools operate an August to June academic year following the American calendar, which differs from the British schools in the city that run August to early July. For an August 2026 start, applications opened at most KL IB schools between September and December 2025. Tier 1 schools like ISKL, Mont'Kiara and IGB closed their main intakes between January and March 2026, with assessment days through February and offers in March and April.
For families relocating mid-year, applications are accepted on a rolling basis subject to availability, with the most movement happening in December and June. Diploma Programme transfers after October of the first year are difficult because IB internal assessments and subject choices are already locked.
