The shape of American provision

Munich does not run a dedicated American School in the manner of Frankfurt or Vienna. The Munich American School run by the United States Department of Defense closed in 1995 with the drawdown of US Army Garrison Munich, and the city has not had a single-flag US school since. What it does have is a mature international school market that supplies the American diploma route through Advanced Placement courses overlaid on the IB or a US high school diploma framework. For 2026 academic year filings, two international schools in greater Munich offer AP as a recognised exit route: Bavarian International School at Haimhausen and the Munich city campus, and Munich International School at Starnberg. International School Augsburg, an hour west, also offers AP to families settled in the western Munich corridor.

That two-school core supplies most of the demand from American corporate postings into Munich, which centre on Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, BMW partnerships and the US Consulate in Bogenhausen. The Department of Defense Education Activity does not operate any schools in Bavaria after the 1995 closures, so military and consular families now use the same private international schools as the corporate community. American families looking specifically for a faith-based US school will find no such option inside the city, although Munich International School pays close attention to American university preparation through a dedicated counselling office.

Fees and tier mapping

Munich AP and US diploma fees are denominated in euros and follow three rough tiers. The mid tier, EUR 16,000 to EUR 22,000, captures Bavarian International School at Haimhausen and the Munich city campus, plus International School Augsburg. The premium tier, EUR 22,000 to EUR 30,000, is the senior years at Munich International School in Starnberg, where AP runs alongside the IB Diploma. Capital contributions of EUR 6,000 to EUR 9,500 sit on top, refundable in part when the child leaves. Examination fees for AP papers add roughly EUR 130 per subject, with transport and trips loading another 10 to 15 percent.

Total cost of an AP route in Munich therefore lands close to a New England independent day school. A published EUR 24,000 tuition is closer to EUR 28,500 once everything is paid. The Munich fees guide walks through the loading in detail. Our fees comparison tool shows tuition by year group across cities.

Illustrative example schools

The schools below are illustrative, not a ranking. Each holds recognised accreditation and an AP or US diploma exit route.

Munich International School at Starnberg, 30 kilometres southwest of central Munich, runs the IB Diploma with the option to overlay AP examinations. American families typically take AP English Literature, AP US History, AP Calculus and one or two science APs alongside their IB subjects. Strong counselling track record into Ivy League and top tier US private universities.

Bavarian International School at Haimhausen and the Schwabing-Freimann city campus runs the IB Diploma with AP delivered as an optional layer. Diploma cohorts in the city campus are still maturing; Haimhausen has the longer AP record. Curriculum sequencing in elementary and middle years follows a US-friendly model with Common Core mathematics references and American literature staples in English classes.

International School Augsburg, an hour west of central Munich on the A8 motorway, runs the IB continuum with AP overlay at sixth form. Worth considering for families settled in western Munich, Stadelheim, Gruenwald west or the Augsburg corridor where commutes to Starnberg or Haimhausen are unworkable.

Where American families live

American families in Munich cluster around four neighbourhood pools shaped by school location and corporate proximity. Bogenhausen, Herzogpark and Englschalking sit close to the US Consulate and offer good links to both Bavarian International School Schwabing and Munich International School at Starnberg via the A99. Schwabing, Schwabing-Freimann and Neuhausen for families committed to the Bavarian International School city campus, with strong restaurant culture and U-Bahn links into central business districts.

Starnberg, Tutzing, Pocking and Herrsching for Munich International School families, with lakeside living, the S6 line into central Munich and a long-established expatriate community. Gruenwald, Pullach and the Isar valley for villa stock and access to both Diploma schools via transport networks, particularly popular with senior executives at BMW, Allianz and Apple's Munich silicon design centre.

The US Consulate area in Bogenhausen runs an informal American community network through the Consulate community liaison and the American Women's Club of Munich, both useful entry points for newly arrived families. Our cost calculator bundles transport, fees and housing into a single total relocation budget.

Admissions calendar

Munich academic year runs from early September to late July, following the Bavarian state schools calendar rather than the US August to June rhythm. American families relocating from the United States therefore lose a few weeks of summer to the earlier start, which catches some by surprise. Applications for September 2026 entry opened across most international schools from October 2025. Bavarian International School and Munich International School close their main intakes by March, with Year 12 AP intake closing by April subject to academic assessment.

Mid-year transfers are accepted into elementary and middle year groups where space exists. AP and Diploma transfers after October of the senior years are generally not accepted because subject choices and internal assessments are already underway. International School Augsburg has more flexibility on mid-year admissions because cohort sizes are smaller.
