How many IB schools in Munich

Munich hosts five authorised IB World Schools as of 2026 filings. That figure spans the Primary Years Programme, the Middle Years Programme and the Diploma Programme. Three schools offer the full Diploma Programme at the senior years: Bavarian International School, Munich International School and the European School Munich, the latter delivering the IB Diploma alongside the European Baccalaureate. The cluster covers Haimhausen to the north of the city, Neuperlach to the southeast, the Starnberger See area and central Munich, with the recently opened Bavarian International School city campus filling demand in Schwabing.

Munich IB provision is mature for a German city. Munich International School opened in 1966 and ran the IB Diploma from 1971, making it one of the earliest IB schools in Europe. Bavarian International School was founded in 1990 and now operates the largest IB student body in Bavaria across its two campuses. The European School Munich is part of the European Schools network serving the European Patent Office and other EU institutions; admission priorities differ from the private IB schools because EU staff children take precedence.

Munich IB Diploma averages across the established schools sit between 33 and 36 points in recent examination sessions, comfortably above the global IB average of 30.3. The newer Diploma cohorts at the Bavarian International School city campus are still completing their first complete graduating years, so academic outcomes for that specific campus are less established than the longer-running Haimhausen site.

Fees and the IB tiers

Munich IB tuition is denominated in euros and split into three rough tiers. The European School Munich operates outside the fee market because EU staff children attend free under the European Schools agreement, with private fees of around EUR 6,500 to EUR 11,000 a year for category two and three children who do not qualify for free places. The mid tier among private IB schools, EUR 14,000 to EUR 21,000, captures Bavarian International School at Haimhausen and the Munich city campus, alongside International School Augsburg for families settled in western Munich and the Augsburg corridor. The premium tier, EUR 21,000 to EUR 28,000, is the senior years at Munich International School in Starnberg and the full Diploma cohort at Bavarian International School Munich.

Published tuition understates total cost. Capital contributions, registration, examination fees, transport and trips add roughly 12 to 18 percent on top of tuition at the established schools. A EUR 21,000 published tuition is closer to EUR 24,500 once everything is paid. The capital contribution at Munich International School and Bavarian International School is a one-off payment of around EUR 6,000 to EUR 9,500 per family, refundable in part when the child leaves. Illustrative example schools

The schools below are illustrative, not a ranking. Each holds full IB authorisation and a stable accreditation record.

Bavarian International School at Haimhausen, 25 kilometres north of central Munich, is an IB continuum school running PYP, MYP and Diploma on a large rural campus. The newer city campus in Schwabing-Freimann offers PYP and MYP, with senior years transferring to Haimhausen via dedicated transport. Diploma averages above 34 points.

Munich International School at Starnberg, 30 kilometres southwest of central Munich on Starnberger See, has run the IB Diploma since 1971 and pairs it with the IB Primary Years and Middle Years Programmes. Lakeside campus, strong music and outdoor education, with Diploma averages historically above 35 points and a deep alumni network.

European School Munich at Neuperlach delivers the IB Diploma alongside the European Baccalaureate. Admission priorities favour children of European Union institution staff; private applicants are admitted on a space-available basis.

International School Augsburg, an hour west of central Munich, runs the IB Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma Programmes. Worth considering for families settled in the western Munich corridor or with workplaces along the A8 motorway.

Where IB families live

IB families in Munich cluster around four neighbourhood pools shaped by school location. Schwabing, Bogenhausen and Freimann for the Bavarian International School city campus and central commuting, with strong restaurant culture and good U-Bahn links. Haimhausen and the northern corridor through Garching, Oberschleissheim and Unterschleissheim for families committed to the Bavarian International School Haimhausen campus, with leafier villa living and shorter direct school runs.

Starnberg, Tutzing, Pocking and the western Wuermtal for Munich International School families, with lakeside living, strong public transport on the S6 line and a long-established expatriate community. Neuperlach, Perlach and the Putzbrunn area for European School Munich families, particularly those working at the European Patent Office in central Munich.

Many IB families with younger children also choose Solln, Pullach and the Isar valley corridor for villa stock and access to all three Diploma schools through transport networks. Munich S-Bahn and tram network is dense enough that a 30 to 45 minute commute is achievable from most southern and western suburbs. Our cost calculator bundles transport, fees and housing into a single total relocation budget.

Admissions calendar

Munich academic year runs from early September to late July, following the Bavarian state schools calendar. Applications for the September 2026 academic year opened across most Munich IB schools from October 2025. The Bavarian International School and Munich International School close their Year 1 and Year 7 main intakes by March, with Diploma Year 12 intake closing by April subject to academic assessment. Late applicants are placed on a waiting list and offered places only as withdrawals come through, typically May to July.

Mid-year transfers are accepted into Year 1 through Year 10 where space exists. Diploma Programme transfers after October of the first year are generally not accepted because subject choices and internal assessments are already underway. The European School Munich has its own admissions process governed by the EU agreement, with applications managed centrally by the European Schools secretariat.
