How many American schools in Muscat
Muscat has around five schools running a recognisable American curriculum, anchored by The American International School Muscat in Al Ghubra, known locally as TAISM. The flagship has operated since 1972 and remains the only fully NEASC accredited school in Oman, running the US high school diploma from PreK through Grade 12, with Advanced Placement at high school and an optional IB Diploma route.
The other American influenced schools in Muscat fill specific niches, some serving the diplomatic and US corporate community, others combining US elements with IB or Cambridge stages. The cluster is small but stable, with TAISM running 850 to 900 pupils across K to 12.
Because the cluster is small, families with a fixed Muscat posting and a US passport almost always default to TAISM. The main alternative discussion is whether to bypass the local American option and place a child in an IB World School with similar AP recognition. Our Muscat IB hub covers that decision in detail.
Fees and the American loading
American curriculum fees in Muscat range from about OMR 3,200 a year at the lower end of US influenced schools to OMR 8,500 at TAISM's senior years. The median high school fee in 2026 sits at roughly OMR 7,200. Capital and re enrolment levies at TAISM run to OMR 700 on entry and OMR 250 a year thereafter. For the full fee picture see our Muscat fees guide.
Many US corporate employers in Oman reimburse school fees for assignees, which collapses the family decision into one of curriculum fit and commute. Where employers do not, the gap between TAISM and the larger IB or British alternatives is roughly OMR 1,200 a year, and a meaningful share of US passport families choose IB or British schools where reimbursement is not available.

Illustrative example schools
The schools below are illustrative, not a ranking. Each runs an American influenced or AP enabled programme and serves a meaningful US passport or international family base.
The American International School Muscat in Al Ghubra is the anchor of the cluster, NEASC accredited, US high school diploma, AP courses across the major subject areas, and an optional IB Diploma stream added in recent years.
Al Bashair Private Schools in Al Khoud offers an Omani national curriculum with American syllabus electives and AP options at high school. Strong local enrolment with a smaller expatriate stream.
Pakistan School Muscat in Al Khuwair runs an Aga Khan Examination Board syllabus with American curriculum elements at high school. Predominantly Pakistani enrolment but open to other families.
Indian School Wadi Kabir and the wider Indian School network sometimes offer AP support alongside CBSE for the smaller cohort targeting US university entry.
Where American families live
American families cluster around three zones. Al Ghubra for proximity to TAISM, with the US Embassy and most NGO and corporate compounds nearby. Shatti Al Qurum and Qurum for beach and apartment living, with TAISM transport pipelines covering the area. Al Mouj for newer master planned villas and apartments, popular with families on shorter postings who prioritise lifestyle alongside school commute.
Madinat Sultan Qaboos is mostly British and IB families, although a small American cohort still lives in the older compounds for the village feel and the proximity to BSM as an alternative for younger siblings. The Al Khoud and Bawshar suburbs are lighter on American provision and most TAISM families avoid the longer commute from there.
Admissions and the August intake
TAISM and the wider American cluster run an August to June academic year, distinct from the September to July British and IB calendar. Applications for August 2026 opened in October 2025 with assessment in January, February and March, and offers in March and April. Year on year demand at TAISM exceeds supply at Grade 6 and Grade 9 entry, so apply 9 to 12 months ahead if either is your target.
Mid year transfers into TAISM are accepted on a rolling basis subject to grade availability, but the academic calendar offset can cost a child a term of unfamiliar curriculum. Families relocating in January from a September calendar country sometimes hold a child back a semester to align. Use the compare tool to weigh TAISM against the IB and British alternatives before committing.
