How many IB schools in Muscat

Muscat has nine authorised IB World Schools as of the 2026 IB Organisation register. It is the largest IB cluster in Oman. Five of those schools offer the IB Diploma at sixth form. The remainder run PYP or MYP only, transitioning their secondary pupils onto IGCSE and A Level or the American high school diploma at sixth form.

The Muscat cluster is mature. Most IB schools have run a programme for at least seven years, and American British Academy has delivered the full PYP to Diploma continuum since 2003. Newer entrants from 2020 onward are still building meaningful Diploma cohorts, so check the candidate count before reading too much into averages.

Ministry of Education oversight in Oman is lighter than the KHDA model in Dubai. There is no public IB league table for Muscat, so schools rely on the IB Organisation bulletin and their own pass rates. Ask for three years of average Diploma points and the share scoring above 35.

Fees and the three tier map

IB tuition in Muscat is grouped into three tiers. The value tier sits at OMR 3,500 to OMR 5,200 per year for secondary, covering schools such as Indian School Muscat and some Azzan bin Qais sections. The mid tier at OMR 5,500 to OMR 7,400 covers most of the established names including The Sultan's School and Muscat International School. The premium tier from OMR 7,500 to OMR 9,200 captures the American British Academy and the senior years at TAISM where IB has been added.

Published tuition is not the all in cost. Capital levies, transport, books, exam fees and trips add roughly 18 to 25 percent on top, which is lower than Dubai but still material. Our Muscat fees guide walks through the loading mathematics.

Illustrative example schools

The five schools below are illustrative, not a ranking. Each has a clear IB record, an established cohort and a settled identity in the Muscat market.

American British Academy in Madinat Sultan Qaboos runs the full PYP, MYP and IB Diploma continuum. The longest established IB school in Oman, with the most predictable university outcomes.

The Sultan's School in Seeb runs the IB Diploma at sixth form alongside the Omani national curriculum at primary. A bilingual Arabic and English profile, with a distinctly local sixth form cohort and small expatriate stream.

Muscat International School in Wadi Kabir runs Cambridge primary through to IB Diploma sixth form, giving families a transition into IB after IGCSE. Strong cohort sizes across both routes.

The American International School Muscat has added the IB Diploma alongside its American high school diploma, broadening university options for US and dual passport families.

Where IB families live

IB families in Muscat cluster around four areas. Madinat Sultan Qaboos for proximity to ABA and the longest established expatriate community. Shatti Al Qurum and Qurum for beach and apartment living near TAISM. Al Mouj for newer apartment and villa developments, with bus routes into ABA and TAISM. Bawshar and Al Khoud for villa families with children at Muscat International School or The Sultan's School.

IB tends to attract internationally mobile families on shorter assignments who value curriculum portability, particularly Canadian, Dutch, German and Australian expatriates posted to Oman by oil and gas or government employers.

Admissions calendar

Applications for September 2026 entry opened in most Muscat IB schools between October and December 2025. The largest schools close their main intake for Year 7 and Year 12 by late January, with assessment days in February and offers in March. Late applicants go onto a waiting list and pick up places only as withdrawals come through, typically May to August.

For families relocating mid year, applications are accepted on a rolling basis subject to availability. Diploma Programme transfers after October of the first year are difficult because subject choices and internal assessments are already underway. If you are committing to a specific Tier 1 school, apply 9 to 12 months before your desired start. Use the compare tool to weigh schools by cohort size, Diploma average and university destinations.
