How many primary schools in Muscat

Muscat hosts around 22 international primary schools open at Year 1 to Year 6 in 2026. The breakdown by curriculum is roughly 14 British curriculum schools running EYFS and the National Curriculum for England, three American schools running the Common Core programme, three IB Primary Years Programme schools and two bilingual Arabic English primaries that mix the Omani national curriculum with international content. Six of these are sole primary providers and the remaining 16 run primary as part of a through campus that extends to secondary and sixth form.

Cohort sizes vary widely. The largest primaries are British School Muscat with roughly 75 children per year group, Indian School Muscat with around 90 per year, Muscat Private School with 65 to 70 per year and The American International School of Muscat with about 55 per year. The smaller primaries run 24 to 40 children per year group. The IB PYP cluster is the most consistent in cohort size, with ABA Oman the largest at around 50 per year. Primary cohort size matters for friendship resilience as families transition in and out on posting cycles.

Fees and the tier map

Primary fees in Muscat range from about OMR 2,400 a year at value tier providers in Al Khoud and Bawshar to OMR 6,800 at the premium American school. The median Year 3 fee in 2026 sits at roughly OMR 4,400, with Year 6 adding a small 5 percent step at most schools to fund the transition into Year 7. Illustrative example schools

The schools below are illustrative, not a ranking. Each runs a full Year 1 to Year 6 programme and has been operating in Muscat for at least 15 years.

British School Muscat in Madinat Sultan Qaboos delivers the National Curriculum for England from Year 1 to Year 6 with full BSO accreditation and a strong outdoor learning thread. The oldest British primary in Oman, founded in 1971, and the most competitive Year 1 entry point in the city.

The American International School of Muscat in Madinat Qaboos runs the Common Core programme through Grade 5 with the AERO standards as a framework. Strong arts and music provision and a year long expedition unit for Grade 4 and Grade 5. The largest American primary in the country.

ABA Oman in Al Ghubrah is an IB PYP World School from Pre-K through Grade 5, with a strong inquiry based approach and the longest established IB primary in Muscat. Direct progression into the IB Middle Years Programme and Diploma at secondary.

Muscat Private School in Madinat Sultan Qaboos runs the Cambridge primary syllabus through Year 6 with a larger cohort than BSM and a clear English dominant programme alongside daily Arabic. Strong route into MPS secondary.

The Sultan's School in Seeb delivers a bilingual Arabic English primary that mixes the Omani national curriculum with British content, with a 50/50 immersion split by subject from Year 1. Roughly 80 percent of primary places taken by Omani national families with the rest from the international community.

Where primary school families live

Muscat primary families cluster across four main residential corridors. Madinat Sultan Qaboos and Madinat Qaboos serve BSM, MPS and TAISM families, with villa living and 10 to 15 minute commutes. Al Khuwair and Al Ghubrah serve ABA Oman, Deutsche Schule Muskat Grundschule and the ABQ primary network, with newer apartment and mid rise developments. Seeb, Al Hail and Al Khoud serve The Sultan's School, Al Sahwa and the value tier primaries, with villa compounds and a strong Omani national family base. Al Mouj on the western coast serves families using the BSM and TAISM bus loops, with master planned apartments popular with shorter posting families.

Primary commute times in Muscat are short by Gulf standards. Most families run 15 to 25 minutes to school. The longest routine commute is from Al Mouj to TAISM at around 35 minutes in morning traffic, and even that is shorter than equivalent runs in Dubai or Doha. Bus services are universal across the major schools, with door to door pick up included in transport fees. Our Muscat neighbourhoods guide walks through residential trade offs in detail.

Admissions and the Year 1 bottleneck

Year 1 is the tightest bottleneck at the major Muscat primaries because Foundation Stage cohorts at BSM, MPS, TAISM and ABA Oman roll forward intact, so external applicants are competing only for the seats left over after siblings. Applications for September 2026 opened at most schools between October and December 2025. Assessment days run through January and February, with offers in March and confirmation deposits due within ten working days of offer issue.

Mid primary entry into Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 is slightly more open because expatriate postings turn over on three to five year cycles, with families leaving at the half term and end of year break. Most schools maintain a Year 3 to Year 5 waiting list that turns over twice a year. Year 6 entry is unusual but possible at MPS, the Sultan's School and the value tier primaries.
