How many primary schools serve Riyadh
ETEC lists roughly 38 schools in Riyadh running an international primary programme for ages 6 to 11. The British curriculum is dominant. About 22 campuses run the National Curriculum for England through Years 1 to 6, with EYFS feeders attached. Five primaries run the IB Primary Years Programme, six follow an American elementary approach with Common Core influences, and two are AEFE-affiliated French primaries. The remainder are bilingual Arabic-English settings that operate within ETEC's national framework while marketing themselves as international.
The picture has changed quickly. Since Vision 2030 lifted constraints on private schooling, the international primary cohort has grown by an estimated 32 percent. Names like SEK International School Riyadh, King's Academy Riyadh and several Sabis branches have expanded their primary intake. The British International School of Riyadh remains the largest single primary by enrolment with roughly 980 pupils on its Diplomatic Quarter campus, followed by Multinational School Riyadh and the American International School. Class sizes across the cluster average 18 to 22 pupils through primary.
Fees and the ETEC tiers
Primary tuition in Riyadh is grouped into three rough tiers. The value tier, SAR 45,000 to SAR 58,000, covers schools like Sabis Riyadh and Manarat Al Riyadh's English stream. The mid tier sits at SAR 58,000 to SAR 78,000 and captures most established names including BISR junior years, Multinational School Riyadh and Kingdom Schools International Section. The premium tier, SAR 78,000 to SAR 95,000, includes SEK International School Riyadh, King's Academy Riyadh's primary years and the American International School. Convert at roughly 3.75 to the US dollar.
Published tuition is not the all-in cost. ETEC permits annual fee increases tied to inspection rating, with Distinguished schools allowed larger uplifts. On top of tuition, expect 15 to 25 percent in capital levies, transport, books and trips. A SAR 70,000 tuition fee is closer to SAR 88,000 once everything is paid. Illustrative example schools
The four primaries below are illustrative, not a ranking. Each has been operating for at least a decade and holds a current ETEC Good or Distinguished rating.
British International School of Riyadh in the Diplomatic Quarter is the legacy British primary in the city. Standard EYFS to Year 6 progression, large peer group and strong continuity into BISR secondary at Year 7. The default for British and Commonwealth diplomatic families.
Multinational School Riyadh in Al Nakheel offers IB Primary Years Programme through Years 1 to 6, feeding directly into the school's MYP and Diploma Programme. A good choice for families committed to the IB pathway from age 6.
American International School Riyadh, attached to the US Embassy, runs an American elementary programme with Common Core influences, popular with diplomatic and oil and gas families on shorter rotations. Strong learning support provision in lower primary.
Kingdom Schools International Section in Al Yasmin runs a bilingual British-Saudi primary with stronger Arabic provision than most international schools. Popular with mixed-nationality and Saudi expatriate families looking for genuine biliteracy by Year 6.
Where primary families live
Primary-age families in Riyadh cluster around three zones. The Diplomatic Quarter dominates for embassy, diplomatic and senior corporate roles, with BISR, SEK and several attached primaries on the compound. Al Nakheel and Al Yasmin in northern Riyadh house the bulk of corporate expatriates, with villa compounds and easy bus access to Multinational School and Kingdom Schools. Hittin and Al Rabwah serve mid-tier families with strong primary school clusters, and Al Olaya remains the apartment-dwelling option for downtown executives using school transport. Admissions calendar
Applications for the August 2026 intake opened in most Riyadh primaries between October and December 2025. Tier 1 schools close their main Year 1 to Year 6 intake by late January. Late applicants are placed on a waiting list and offered places only as withdrawals come through, typically May to July. For families relocating mid-year, primaries accept rolling applications subject to availability, with most movement happening between November and February. Documentation requirements include the previous school's report card, an iqama or visa endorsement, an Absher account and an English assessment for new entrants beyond Year 2.
If a Tier 1 Riyadh primary is non-negotiable, apply 9 to 12 months before your desired start. Diplomatic letters from the relevant embassy can move applicants ahead of waiting lists at BISR and the American International School but do not guarantee a place.
