Abu Dhabi is the tax-free, beach-side landing of the two, with strong British and American schools sitting just below Dubai on the global fee table. Beijing is the premium Asian option, with some of the deepest IB Diploma provision in Asia and price tags to match. Both regulate enrolment closely: Beijing limits fully international schools to foreign-passport-holders, Abu Dhabi requires ADEK licensing and curriculum alignment.

Schools landscape side by side

Abu Dhabi has more than 200 private schools regulated by ADEK (the Department of Education and Knowledge). Flagships include Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, the British International School Abu Dhabi (BIS), American Community School (ACS) Abu Dhabi, Brighton College Abu Dhabi, the American School of Abu Dhabi and Repton Abu Dhabi. Indian curriculum provision is well represented for families relocating with the South Asian diaspora. See the Abu Dhabi schools hub.

Beijing has about 25 fully international schools and a broader tier of bilingual private schools. Flagships include the International School of Beijing (ISB) in Shunyi, the Western Academy of Beijing (WAB), Dulwich College Beijing, Harrow International School Beijing, Beijing City International School (BCIS) and the British School of Beijing. ISB Shunyi is the long-standing default for many Western expat families. The Beijing schools hub covers each in detail.

Fees and value for money

Abu Dhabi premium secondary fees sit between AED 80,000 and AED 120,000 per year (around USD 22,000 to USD 32,700) at Cranleigh, BIS, ACS and Brighton College. The mid-market between AED 45,000 and AED 70,000 is well populated. Add technology levies, transport and lunch for 15 to 25 percent on top. Tax-free pay generally offsets most schooling costs for senior hires.

Beijing premium secondary fees sit between RMB 280,000 and RMB 450,000 per year (around USD 39,000 to USD 63,000). Application fees of RMB 2,500 to 4,000, refundable enrolment deposits of RMB 20,000 to 60,000, and capital levies of RMB 25,000 to 60,000 are standard. Most expat packages in Beijing build in fully paid school fees because the all-in cost can easily exceed RMB 500,000 per child. See the fees explorer.

Curriculum availability

Both cities deliver IB, British (IGCSE and A Level) and American (AP and SAT) pathways. Abu Dhabi tilts strongly toward British, with strong American provision at ACS and the American School. Beijing tilts toward IB and American at the very top, with British provision concentrated at Dulwich, Harrow and the British School. The IB Diploma remains the safest portable credential in either city. Indian curriculum is widely available in Abu Dhabi but rare in Beijing. See the British curriculum hub.

Neighbourhoods families pick

In Abu Dhabi families cluster on Saadiyat Island (Cranleigh, Brighton) and Yas Island (West Yas, Yas Acres), in Al Reem Island for central living, and in the Khalifa City and Al Raha Beach areas for ACS and BIS proximity. A four-bedroom villa on Saadiyat or Yas runs AED 220,000 to AED 380,000 per year.

In Beijing expat families cluster in the Shunyi villa compounds (Beijing Riviera, Yosemite, Quanfa) for proximity to ISB, Dulwich and WAB, in Sanlitun and Chaoyang Park for central living, and around Lido for the British School of Beijing. A four-bedroom villa in Shunyi runs RMB 35,000 to RMB 90,000 per month. Public transport in Beijing is excellent but the school commute often pushes families toward villa compounds within a short drive of school.

Lifestyle and climate

Abu Dhabi has a hot desert climate, comfortable winters around 18 to 28 degrees Celsius from November to March and intense summer heat above 40 from June to September. Outdoor sport runs October to April; family life shifts entirely indoors in summer. Beijing has four full seasons, cold dry winters down to minus 8 degrees, hot summers up to 35 degrees and a notable air-quality challenge in winter when PM2.5 levels spike. Most expat homes use HEPA filtration. Travel from Abu Dhabi favours Europe and South Asia; from Beijing favours East Asia and Australasia.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose Abu Dhabi if tax-free pay matters, you value beach-side living and you are comfortable with intense summer heat. The combination of fully covered tuition allowances and zero income tax can be financially decisive at senior levels.

Choose Beijing if your career trajectory needs China exposure, your employer covers the all-in school costs and your family values the depth of ISB, WAB, Dulwich and Harrow. Most families we work with model both cities through the cost calculator. The five-year delta runs USD 120,000 to USD 220,000 in Abu Dhabi's favour on gross costs, before tax differences.
