Abu Dhabi is dramatically cheaper than Geneva across school fees, housing and disposable spending, with the bonus of tax-free pay. Geneva offers the world's most established IB cluster, excellent civic services, and direct rail to Paris and the rest of Europe, but family budgets need to absorb the highest premium of any European city.
Schools landscape side by side
Abu Dhabi's market is led by Cranleigh Abu Dhabi (Saadiyat Island), Brighton College Abu Dhabi (Al Reem), Repton School (Rose campus and Foundation), the British School Al Khubairat, the American Community School and the Aldar Academies network of British curriculum schools. Most schools admit qualified applicants within four to six weeks outside the very top names.
Geneva is the founding home of the IB Diploma. The flagship is the International School of Geneva (Ecolint), with three campuses (La Grande Boissiere, La Chataigneraie, Pregny-Rigot) covering roughly 4,500 students between them. The other names families shortlist are the College du Leman, Geneva English School, Institut Florimont, and the British School of Geneva. Ecolint and CDL run waiting lists for senior intake; apply at least a term ahead. See our Abu Dhabi city guide and Geneva city guide for current admission notes.

Neighbourhoods families pick
In Abu Dhabi, international school families cluster on Saadiyat Island near Cranleigh, in Al Reem and Al Raha for Brighton and Repton, and on Yas Island for the newer Aldar academies. A 4-bedroom villa on Saadiyat runs AED 250,000 to 450,000 per year. In Geneva, families pick the right-bank communes of Versoix, Bellevue and Genthod for Ecolint Pregny, the left-bank communes of Cologny, Vandoeuvres and Vesenaz for La Grande Boissiere, and Founex on the Vaud side for La Chataigneraie. A 4-bedroom house on Geneva's right bank runs CHF 8,500 to CHF 14,000 per month.
Lifestyle and climate
Abu Dhabi is hot and dry for nine months, with summer peaks above 45 degrees Celsius keeping family life indoors from June to early September. The October to April winter season drives outdoor sport, beach weekends and a thick cultural calendar at the Louvre Abu Dhabi and Manarat Saadiyat. Geneva offers four real seasons, world-class winter sports within 90 minutes (Chamonix, Verbier, Les Gets), and one of the lowest crime rates of any major European city. The Lake Geneva region is the densest cluster of international NGOs, banks and HQs in continental Europe.
Verdict: who picks which city
Choose Abu Dhabi if you want maximum disposable income, tax-free pay, larger family homes and the fast track from offer to enrolment. Choose Geneva if academic prestige and IB outcomes matter more than cost, particularly for children in Years 11 to 13 where Ecolint Diploma results consistently track top-decile globally. Run both cities through the cost calculator before committing. The five-year all-in delta typically runs USD 250,000 to USD 400,000 in Abu Dhabi's favour once tax is included.
