Schools landscape side by side

Abu Dhabi's market is regulated by ADEK and offers over 200 private schools. Families shortlist the British School Al Khubairat (BSAK), Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, Brighton College Abu Dhabi and Repton Abu Dhabi at the British end. ACS Abu Dhabi and the American Community School (ACS) anchor the American track, with Aldar Academies, Raha International School and the International School of Choueifat covering IB and mid-budget options. Capacity is good outside BSAK and Cranleigh primary years.

Rome's Anglophone market is smaller than Milan's but solid. The shortlist begins with Marymount International School Rome (Catholic IB) and St George's British International School (Cambridge plus IB Diploma). Add the American Overseas School of Rome (AOSR), Ambrit International School and the Acorn School for younger years. International School of Rome runs an IB middle and senior school. Most schools are concentrated in the northern Rome belt between Cassia and Parioli.

Fees and value for money

Abu Dhabi tuition is regulated by ADEK with caps tied to inspection ratings. 2026 maximums sit between AED 35,000 and AED 85,000 for primary and AED 60,000 to AED 110,000 for Sixth Form. BSAK and Cranleigh charge near the top of this range, with Repton, Brighton College and ACS in close formation. Add roughly 10 to 15 percent for transport, uniforms and ICT levies. See our Abu Dhabi fees guide for full breakdowns.

Rome sits in the mid-band of European capitals. Marymount and St George's charge EUR 18,000 to EUR 28,000 for senior school, AOSR is around EUR 17,000 to EUR 23,000 and Ambrit roughly EUR 12,000 to EUR 18,000. Capital and admissions fees add EUR 2,000 to 4,000 in Year 1. Rome is cheaper than London or Paris and roughly comparable with Madrid and Brussels. Use the cost calculator to model a full family year.

Curriculum availability

Both cities cover the global big three: British, IB and American. Abu Dhabi adds an Indian (CBSE) layer and stronger British provision by school count. Rome layers Italian bilingual options on top of English-medium schools, which appeals to families intending to stay long term. The IB Diploma is the safest portable credential in either market. See our IB hub for transfer planning.

Neighbourhoods families pick

Abu Dhabi families cluster in Khalifa City (close to BSAK, Cranleigh and Brighton College), Saadiyat Island (Cranleigh, NYU Abu Dhabi), Al Mushrif and Al Bateen (BSAK catchment) and Al Reem Island for downtown access. A four-bedroom villa with garden runs AED 200,000 to 350,000 per year (roughly AED 17,000 to 29,000 per month). In Rome, families pick Parioli, Pinciano, Cassia (Marymount, St George's) and Trastevere or Aventino for older children at AOSR. A three-bedroom flat in Parioli runs EUR 2,500 to 4,800 per month.

Lifestyle and climate

Abu Dhabi is hot and dry, with summer temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius from June to September. The city is markedly quieter and lower density than Dubai, with cultural anchors at Saadiyat (Louvre Abu Dhabi, Guggenheim under construction). Rome runs Mediterranean: hot dry summers, mild damp winters, and a slower urban rhythm built around long lunches, sport and weekend trips. Both cities are family-safe; Rome's bureaucracy is the main daily friction point for newcomers.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose Abu Dhabi if you want tax-free income, regulated tuition, big villas with gardens and a relatively quiet Gulf family rhythm that still gives you Dubai's airport an hour away.

Choose Rome if you want history, culture and a Mediterranean family lifestyle within the EU, accept Italian bureaucracy and prioritise long lunches over career velocity.

One pragmatic step: visit both cities in different seasons. Abu Dhabi in February feels paradisiacal; in August it asks for indoor planning. Rome in May is golden; in winter the bureaucracy and damp can grind. A 5 to 7 day site visit per city, including a school tour and a tour of one or two real-estate options in the family catchment, materially improves your decision quality and reduces the chance of a costly Year 2 move. Pair this with conversations with three current parents at each shortlisted school.

Frequently asked questions

Is Abu Dhabi or Rome cheaper for international school families in 2026?

Abu Dhabi is generally cheaper once tax-free income and regulated tuition are factored in. Headline school fees are broadly similar but housing costs more in Rome's expat catchments and Italian income tax materially reduces disposable household income.

Which city offers better international schools?

Abu Dhabi has greater depth across British, IB and American provision, with BSAK, Cranleigh and Brighton College leading. Rome's flagships (Marymount, St George's, AOSR) are excellent but the market is smaller and less varied.

Is the family visa easier in Abu Dhabi or Rome?

Abu Dhabi is far easier. Employer sponsorship or Golden Visa typically covers spouse and children without an income test in most cases. Italy requires consulate-issued work and family visas which can take 6 to 12 weeks plus permesso di soggiorno on arrival.

How long do admissions take in each city?

Abu Dhabi schools respond within 3 to 6 weeks outside BSAK and Cranleigh. Rome's premium schools generally respond within 4 to 8 weeks with moderate waitlists at popular entry points.

Where do most international school families live in each city?

Abu Dhabi families cluster in Khalifa City, Saadiyat Island, Al Mushrif and Al Reem. Rome families cluster in Parioli, Pinciano and the Cassia corridor near Marymount and St George's.
