Abu Dhabi is the cheaper of the two on most categories and comes with tax-free income plus generous employer education allowances. Seoul has a deeper Tier 1 American and IB market but at higher fees and substantially higher cost of living. Both have mature English-medium provision to age 18 and protect portable credentials.

Schools landscape side by side

Abu Dhabi's expat bench is led by the British International School Abu Dhabi (BISAD), Repton School Abu Dhabi, Cranleigh Abu Dhabi, American Community School (ACS), Brighton College Al Ain, GEMS World Academy and the Aldar Academies network. ADEK regulates fees and curriculum standards across the emirate. Most premium schools follow the English National Curriculum with IB Diploma in Years 12 and 13, or a US curriculum with AP options at ACS. See our Abu Dhabi city guide for the neighbourhood breakdown.

Seoul's international bench is led by Seoul Foreign School (SFS, the oldest international school in Korea), Yongsan International School of Seoul, Dulwich College Seoul (Songpa), Korea International School (KIS, Pangyo, full IB), Seoul International School (SIS, Bundang) and the British School Yongsan. Chadwick International in Songdo (Incheon) is a 35-minute drive west and increasingly favoured for the IB programme. Foreign passport requirements apply at most schools.

Fees and value for money

Abu Dhabi premium senior school fees in 2026 sit between AED 60,000 and AED 110,000 (USD 16,000 to USD 30,000) at BISAD, Repton, Cranleigh and ACS. Mid-tier schools run AED 35,000 to AED 65,000. ADEK publishes the maximum allowable annual increases. Registration, reassessment, technology and transport levies add 15 to 25 percent on top of tuition. See our Abu Dhabi fees guide for the full load.

Seoul's premium schools charge KRW 28 million to KRW 42 million per year (USD 21,000 to USD 32,000) for upper secondary. KIS, SFS and Dulwich sit at the top end. Mid-tier schools run KRW 18 million to KRW 26 million. First-year costs including capital levies, registration, uniforms and buses can add KRW 5 million to KRW 12 million. Use the cost calculator to model both cities side by side.

Curriculum availability

Abu Dhabi leans British and IB; Seoul leans American and IB. Both cover the full IB Diploma at Tier 1 schools. AP pathways are stronger in Seoul through KIS and SIS than in Abu Dhabi. English National Curriculum is wider in Abu Dhabi. Korean families and dual-passport children face additional regulatory checks for entry to most international schools in Seoul.

Neighbourhoods families pick

Abu Dhabi families cluster on Saadiyat Island, Yas Island and in Khalifa City for proximity to Cranleigh, Repton and BISAD. A four-bedroom villa on Saadiyat Beach Residences runs AED 320,000 to AED 600,000 per year; equivalent on Yas Island runs AED 220,000 to AED 400,000.

Seoul families pick Yongsan-gu (Hannam-dong, Itaewon) for SFS and YISS, Seongbuk-gu for ASD, and Gangnam-Pangyo for KIS and Bundang schools. Songdo in Incheon hosts Chadwick International with the strongest IB Diploma cohort in Korea. A four-bedroom apartment in Hannam-dong runs KRW 6 million to KRW 14 million per month; equivalent in Pangyo runs KRW 5 million to KRW 10 million.

Lifestyle and climate

Abu Dhabi wins on outdoor family life nine months a year, beach access, low traffic and the generally relaxed Gulf rhythm. Seoul wins on cultural depth, food culture, public transport quality and rapid intra-Asia connectivity. Climate is a clear differentiator: Abu Dhabi exceeds 45C from June to September, while Seoul has four distinct seasons with cold winters around minus 10C.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose Abu Dhabi if you want tax-free income, lower household costs and generous employer education allowances. Choose Seoul if you want a deeper American and IB Tier 1 bench, the cultural richness of an East Asian capital and easier access to the rest of Asia. Most families we work with run both cities through the cost calculator before committing. Net savings often favour Abu Dhabi at equivalent tier schools.
