Dubai offers wider school choice, tax-free salaries and larger family villas, but at premium pricing. Mumbai offers lower headline fees, household help at a fraction of Gulf cost and a culturally rich home base, in exchange for monsoon, infrastructure variation and Indian taxation. Both run mature English-medium school sectors.

Schools landscape side by side

Dubai's market is the larger of the two by international school count, with more than 220 private schools regulated by KHDA. Around 32 are authorised IB World Schools, 74 follow the British curriculum and roughly 38 run an American pathway. Flagships parents recognise include GEMS Wellington International, JESS Dubai, Dubai College, Repton, Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills and several leading Indian-curriculum schools such as JSS Private and GEMS Modern Academy.

Mumbai's international and Indian premium sector is concentrated in around 35 to 45 schools. The shortlist most expat parents focus on is Dhirubhai Ambani International School (DAIS), Oberoi International School, Ecole Mondiale World School, BD Somani International and the American School of Bombay. Strong Indian-curriculum options such as Cathedral and John Connon, Bombay Scottish and JBCN International also feature in expat shortlists. Fees and value for money

Average international school tuition in Dubai sits around USD 18,000 to 24,000 per year for secondary, with premium schools such as Dwight and Swiss International Scientific School pushing USD 28,000 to 30,000. Indian-curriculum schools start much lower at AED 9,000 to AED 40,000 per year. KHDA caps fee increases against inspection ratings.

Mumbai is materially cheaper. International school tuition runs INR 7,50,000 to INR 14,00,000 in primary (around USD 9,000 to USD 17,000) and INR 16,00,000 to INR 22,00,000 in IB Diploma and A Level years (USD 19,000 to USD 26,000). Add registration of INR 50,000 to INR 2,00,000 and IGCSE or IB exam fees of INR 1,00,000 to INR 3,00,000 per session in older years. Use the cost calculator to model a five-year all-in number per child. Our fees explorer ranks schools by total cost in both cities.

Curriculum availability

Dubai is heavily British and IB by school count, with strong American and Indian CBSE options. Mumbai's premium sector is IB and Cambridge IGCSE plus A Level, with deep Indian CBSE and ICSE coverage. The IB Diploma is well established at DAIS, Oberoi and Ecole Mondiale. Cambridge IGCSE and A Level are dominant at JBCN and BD Somani.

Neighbourhoods families pick

In Dubai, international school families cluster in Arabian Ranches, Dubai Hills Estate, Jumeirah, Mirdif, The Springs and Al Barsha. School-bus routes are dense and a four-bedroom villa with a garden runs USD 4,000 to 6,500 per month.

In Mumbai, families pick Bandra West and Khar for DAIS and Ecole Mondiale, Powai for the Hiranandani Foundation cluster and Oberoi proximity, Juhu and Worli for inner-city schools, and Lower Parel for upmarket apartments with city access. A three-bedroom apartment in Bandra West or Worli runs INR 2,50,000 to INR 6,00,000 per month, around USD 3,000 to USD 7,200.

Lifestyle and climate

Dubai delivers tax-free income, excellent infrastructure, world-class hospitals and easy long-haul travel. Mumbai delivers cultural richness, vibrant food, deep family domestic help (driver, cook, nanny at modest cost) and proximity to the rest of India. Mumbai's monsoon (June to September) and infrastructure variation are the main downsides for new arrivals.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose Dubai if you want maximum living space, tax-free income, premium British or IB schooling and a faster-moving career market. It is the stronger city for households on international packages with no India connection. Choose Mumbai if you want a culturally rich home base, much lower fees, household help at Gulf-impossible prices, and family ties or business reasons that pull you toward India. Many South Asian families run both cities through the cost calculator and find Mumbai's gap closing fast once Gulf tax-free advantages are stripped out.

If you are still weighing both, run both through the cost calculator for a five-year all-in number, then use the school finder quiz to shortlist schools that fit your child. The comparison tool lets you put up to three schools side by side.

Frequently asked questions

Is Dubai or Mumbai cheaper for international school families in 2026?

Mumbai is much cheaper overall. Dubai (and Abu Dhabi) costs roughly twice as much as Mumbai per Expatistan 2026 data. School fees, rent and household running costs are all materially lower in Mumbai.

Which city has stronger international schools?

Dubai has wider choice and a stronger British and IB market by school count. Mumbai has a smaller but high-quality bench, with DAIS, Oberoi, Ecole Mondiale and ASB consistently producing strong IB and Cambridge outcomes.

Is the family visa easier in Dubai or Mumbai?

Dubai is faster. UAE Golden Visas and employer sponsorship cover spouses and children with light income tests. Mumbai requires an Employment (E) visa with X dependent visa, manageable but slower.

Can expat children attend Indian public or low-fee private schools in Mumbai?
