Dubai is the easier, more international and higher-fee city. New Delhi is the cheaper, more culturally immersive and more diplomatic posting, with a smaller pool of foreign-curriculum schools concentrated around the diplomatic enclave.

Schools landscape side by side

Dubai's market is large and regulated by KHDA. Flagship names include GEMS Wellington International, JESS Dubai, Dubai College, Repton Dubai, Dwight School Dubai, Brighton College Dubai and Dubai International Academy. With 220-plus schools, capacity is good outside Tier 1 and many families place within four to six weeks. Inspection ratings make quality visible. See our Dubai schools hub for the full landscape.

New Delhi's foreign-curriculum bench is small but elite. The American Embassy School (AES) in Chanakyapuri runs an American Diploma plus IB pathway and is the standout choice for diplomatic and corporate families. The British School New Delhi, Pathways World School (Aravali campus on the Gurugram border), Modern School Vasant Vihar and Lancers International serve the wider IB and IGCSE market. Demand for Grade 1 and Grade 11 places at AES and TBS is high.

Fees and value for money

Dubai sits mid-band globally for premium fees. Wellington, Dubai College and Repton publish secondary fees of AED 80,000 to AED 110,000 (USD 22,000 to USD 30,000). Mid-tier schools such as GEMS Founders run AED 40,000 to AED 65,000. KHDA fee caps tied to inspection ratings provide year-on-year budget predictability.

New Delhi runs cheaper but with significant year-one extras. AES publishes annual tuition of roughly USD 24,000 plus a one-time capital fee, application costs and refundable deposits that push first-year costs above USD 30,000. The British School and Pathways sit at INR 9 lakh to INR 13 lakh (USD 11,000 to USD 16,000). Many employers cover school fees in full for diplomatic, multilateral and senior corporate roles. Curriculum availability

Dubai has every major curriculum at scale: British (the largest by school count), IB, American, Indian (CBSE), French and German. The IB Diploma is the safest portable credential and is offered at 32 schools. Read our British curriculum hub or IB hub for guidance.

New Delhi covers American Diploma at AES, British and IGCSE at The British School, and IB at Pathways and Modern School. Indian boards (CBSE, ICSE) dominate the local landscape but rarely suit relocating families. Foreign nationals are not eligible for Kendriya Vidyalaya central government schools.

Neighbourhoods families pick

In Dubai, international school families cluster in Arabian Ranches, Dubai Hills Estate, Jumeirah, Mirdif, The Springs and Al Barsha. A four-bedroom villa runs AED 200,000 to AED 320,000 annually with school-bus routes covering most areas.

In New Delhi, the diplomatic enclave Chanakyapuri sits at the centre of the international school catchment, with most foreign families living in adjacent Shantipath, Vasant Vihar, Anand Niketan and Westend. Gurugram suburbs (DLF Phases 1 to 5, Golf Course Road) serve families at Pathways and the British School. A four-bedroom independent house in Vasant Vihar runs INR 350,000 to INR 700,000 per month including full-time staff in many leases.

Lifestyle and climate

Dubai is hot and dry with summer peaks from June to September and beautiful winters for outdoor sport. Crime is very low, healthcare on private insurance is excellent, and the leisure economy (beaches, malls, family activities) is unmatched in the Gulf.

New Delhi has hot dry summers, a monsoon from July to September and cool dry winters. Air quality is the principal concern, with PM2.5 routinely reaching hazardous levels from late October to February. Many international school families invest in HEPA-filtered homes and accept a partly-indoor winter rhythm. The cultural offer (Mughal monuments, Lutyens architecture, food) is exceptional, and India travel is straightforward.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose Dubai if you want tax-free income, a large international community, regulated school fees and outdoor family life eight months a year. It is the easier landing pad for families new to the region.

Choose New Delhi if you have a diplomatic posting, a multilateral or development role, or a senior India-facing corporate position with school fees covered. It offers deep India exposure and a network few cities can match, with the air quality trade-off being the largest objective downside.
