Schools landscape side by side

Geneva has around 18 international schools, a deep IB heritage and the highest fee floor in Europe. The flagships are the International School of Geneva (Ecolint) across three campuses, the Geneva English School, College du Leman in Versoix and the British School of Geneva. Ecolint alone runs nearly 4,500 pupils across French and English streams. See our Geneva schools hub for the city pillar.

Riyadh has roughly 35 international schools, with the bench expanding rapidly under Vision 2030. The flagships are American International School Riyadh (AIS-R) in Diplomatic Quarter, British International School Riyadh (BISR) in Salwa, KAUST partner schools and the Multinational Schools Riyadh (MNS-R). Newer entrants include Aldenham School Riyadh (British) and Makers of the Future (IB and American). See the Riyadh schools hub.

Fees and value for money

Geneva is the most expensive international school market in Europe. Ecolint runs CHF 19,800 in early years to CHF 35,468 at IB Diploma. College du Leman day fees reach CHF 40,000 with boarding higher still. British School of Geneva sits CHF 18,000 to CHF 28,000. Add a one-off enrolment fee of CHF 2,000 to CHF 5,000 and an annual capital levy of up to CHF 10,000 at premium schools. Most relocations cover full tuition.

Riyadh fees split by tier. BISR runs SAR 60,000 to SAR 135,000 per year across primary to Sixth Form. AIS-R SAR 60,000 to SAR 110,000. Mid-tier schools like Aldenham Riyadh and Makers of the Future sit SAR 46,500 to SAR 87,400. Budget mid-tier options run SAR 30,000 to SAR 45,000. Add a one-off enrolment fee of SAR 5,000 to SAR 15,000. Most Saudi-employer packages cover school fees for two children.

Curriculum availability

Geneva is IB at the source: Ecolint pioneered the Diploma in 1968 and runs the full Continuum. British curriculum runs at the British School of Geneva and within parts of College du Leman. Riyadh leads on British curriculum (BISR, Aldenham) and American (AIS-R), with growing IB provision at Makers of the Future and selected Saudi national-international schools. See the IB hub and the British curriculum hub for curriculum guidance.

Neighbourhoods families pick

In Geneva families cluster around Pregny-Chambesy and Grand-Saconnex (near Ecolint Nations), Cologny and Vandoeuvres for the lakeside premium belt, and Versoix and Genthod for the international corridor along Lake Geneva. A four-bedroom house in Cologny or Vandoeuvres runs CHF 8,000 to CHF 15,000 per month.

In Riyadh expat families cluster in the Diplomatic Quarter (DQ), Hittin, Al Sahafa, Al Yasmin and the compound belt north of the city. Compound villas in Eid, Cordoba and Arizona Compounds run SAR 200,000 to SAR 450,000 per year all-in, with pool, gym and security. Standalone four-bedroom villas in Hittin run SAR 130,000 to SAR 250,000 per year unfurnished. Compound life remains the default for international school families.

Lifestyle and climate

Geneva delivers an alpine, lake-led lifestyle with skiing 90 minutes away, lake swimming in summer and very low crime. Riyadh runs Gulf-summer hot at 42 to 48 degrees from May to September, mild winters around 18 degrees, life centred on compounds, malls and new mixed-use developments like Diriyah Gate. Healthcare in Riyadh is high-standard private; Geneva runs on Switzerland's mixed private-mandatory insurance. Riyadh has relaxed substantially since 2018 on entertainment, mixed-gender events and tourism.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose Geneva if your employer pays the package, you want IB at the source and you value alpine outdoors and a small, ordered European city. It also suits families who place academic prestige and an English-French bilingual environment at the top of the list.

Choose Riyadh if your career bet is the Gulf or Vision 2030 sectors, you want tax-free income and compound family life, and you can manage the summer heat. Run both through the cost calculator to compare net household spend including housing, schooling and healthcare.

Frequently asked questions

Is Geneva or Riyadh cheaper for international school families in 2026?

Riyadh is substantially cheaper. Numbeo puts Geneva roughly 110 percent more expensive overall in 2026, with rent, restaurants and groceries all sharply lower in Riyadh. School fees are comparable at the top end, but Riyadh's tax-free income flips the comparison for most expats. Total household spend is typically 35 to 55 percent lower in Riyadh.

Are Riyadh schools accepting non-Muslim families in 2026?

Yes. AIS-R, BISR, MNS-R and the newer international schools serve mixed-faith expat communities and most are co-educational with foreign curricula. Islamic studies is optional for non-Muslim children at most international schools. Faith-based programming continues at Saudi national schools and at certain mixed schools.

Is the family visa easier in Geneva or Riyadh?

Riyadh is faster, Geneva is more flexible. A Saudi iqama via employer takes 4 to 8 weeks but binds you to one sponsor; Saudi Premium Residency is now available for around SAR 100,000 one-off or SAR 4,000 per year. Swiss B permits take 8 to 14 weeks with cantonal quotas. Switzerland gives broader EU and Schengen mobility once you hold a permit.

Can my children continue IB Diploma seamlessly between the two cities?

Yes for IB Diploma between Ecolint, the Geneva English School and Makers of the Future in Riyadh. British curriculum families can move between the British School of Geneva and BISR. American curriculum is the cleanest match between AIS-R and Ecolint's bilingual streams. Coordinate transfer at least one academic year in advance for IGCSE or IB Diploma years.

In Geneva the heartlands are Pregny-Chambesy, Grand-Saconnex, Cologny, Vandoeuvres, Versoix and Champel. In Riyadh families pick the Diplomatic Quarter, Hittin, Al Sahafa, Al Yasmin and the compound belt at Eid, Cordoba and Arizona Compounds.
