Dubai is the easier, more mature option for international school families, with a deeper pool of schools, faster admissions and a more established expat infrastructure. Riyadh is catching up fast as Vision 2030 reforms reshape family life, and salaries are often materially higher to attract senior talent. The right choice usually turns on the employer package and how much you value lifestyle versus career uplift.
Schools landscape side by side
Dubai's market is one of the world's largest, with more than 220 private schools regulated by KHDA. Around 32 are authorised IB World Schools, 74 follow the British curriculum and roughly 38 run an American pathway. Flagships parents recognise include GEMS Wellington International, JESS Dubai, Dubai College, Repton, Dwight School Dubai and Dubai International Academy Emirates Hills. Capacity outside the Tier 1 names is generally healthy.
Riyadh has a smaller but rapidly expanding market, with around 25 to 30 schools serving expat families. The flagships are American International School Riyadh (AIS-R), British International School Riyadh (BISR), the King Faisal School, Multinational School Riyadh and the Saudi-British School. Demand at AIS-R and BISR is high, with waiting lists of 6 to 12 months for senior years, and many families look at newer entrants such as Misk Schools and Royal Grammar School Guildford Riyadh.

Fees and value for money
Dubai tuition runs AED 25,000 to AED 60,000 for FS years and AED 55,000 to AED 110,000 for senior school, with premium IB schools reaching AED 130,000. KHDA caps annual fee increases against inspection ratings, which gives parents budget visibility. See our Dubai fees guide for the all-in load including transport and capital levies.
Riyadh tuition runs SAR 60,000 to SAR 95,000 for primary at premium schools and SAR 110,000 to SAR 150,000 for senior years, equivalent to roughly USD 16,000 to USD 40,000. Many multinationals operating in the Kingdom include school fee allowances of SAR 80,000 to SAR 200,000 per child, which materially changes the value picture. Use the cost calculator to model both cities.
Curriculum availability
Dubai is heavily British and IB by school count. Around a third of all KHDA schools follow the English National Curriculum, and the IB Diploma is offered at 32 schools. American programmes are well represented but smaller in share. Riyadh's mix is the opposite. American programmes dominate through AIS-R and Multinational, with British and Saudi-British schools providing the IGCSE and A Level pathway. IB Diploma availability in Riyadh is more limited, with only a handful of authorised schools, though Misk Schools and a couple of newcomers are expanding the offer.

Neighbourhoods families pick
In Dubai, international school families cluster in Arabian Ranches, Dubai Hills Estate, Jumeirah, Mirdif, The Springs and Al Barsha. School bus routes are dense, and a four-bedroom villa with a garden runs AED 200,000 to AED 350,000 per year. In Riyadh, families pick the Diplomatic Quarter (DQ) for proximity to embassies and AIS-R, plus compounds in Al Nakheel, Al Yasmin and the King Abdullah Financial District. Western compound housing runs SAR 200,000 to SAR 500,000 per year, often with on-site pools, schools and security.
Lifestyle and climate
Dubai's lifestyle is famously cosmopolitan. Mixed-gender public life, alcohol in licensed venues, beach weekends and a five-hour flight radius covering Europe, Africa and South Asia. Riyadh has reformed dramatically since 2018. Cinemas, concerts, public sport and mixed-gender restaurants are now normal. The dress code remains more modest in public, alcohol is not available, and weekends have a different rhythm. Both cities share a desert climate with summers above 45 degrees Celsius and pleasant winters.
Verdict: who picks which city
Choose Dubai if you want maximum convenience, broader school choice, an established expat playbook and a beach lifestyle. It suits families with younger children, families who travel often, and dual-career couples. Choose Riyadh if the role and package are materially better, you are open to a quieter family rhythm, and you value being inside one of the fastest-transforming economies in the world. Most senior families we work with negotiate a Riyadh package 25 to 40 percent above the Dubai equivalent to make the move land cleanly.
Frequently asked questions
Is Dubai or Riyadh cheaper for international school families in 2026?
Riyadh is roughly 15 to 20 percent cheaper across rent, food and utilities, but premium school fees can be higher at the top end. Net cost depends heavily on whether the employer provides housing and school allowances.
Which city has better international schools?
Dubai has more choice across more curricula. Riyadh's top schools (AIS-R, BISR, Misk) are excellent but capacity is tight. For IB Diploma availability, Dubai is the clearer choice.
Is the family visa easier in Dubai or Riyadh?
Dubai is easier. UAE Golden Visa and employer sponsorship cover spouses and children with minimal income tests. Riyadh dependant Iqamas are tied to the main applicant's employer sponsorship and require renewal annually.
Can families enjoy a similar lifestyle in Riyadh as in Dubai?
Lifestyle in Riyadh has changed significantly since 2018, with cinemas, restaurants, mixed-gender events and public sport now standard. Alcohol is not available and the public dress code is more modest, but family life is far more open than five years ago.
How long does the school admissions process take in each city?
In Dubai, decisions often come back within four to six weeks outside Tier 1 schools. In Riyadh, AIS-R and BISR commonly require 6 to 12 month waiting lists for senior years; budget at least a full term lead time.
