Abu Dhabi is the cheaper, easier posting; Hong Kong has the deeper Tier 1 bench and global brand pull. Both cities have mature English-medium provision from early years to age 18 and serve families on multi-year postings well, provided you align curriculum, budget and year group from the start.

Schools landscape side by side

Hong Kong hosts one of the world's most competitive international school markets. Shortlists feature the English Schools Foundation (ESF) network, Harrow International School Hong Kong, Hong Kong International School, Chinese International School, German Swiss International School, the Canadian International School and the French International School. ESF is the value bench; HKIS, Harrow and Chinese International push HKD 230,000 plus per year.

Abu Dhabi has a fast-maturing market regulated by the Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK). Flagships include Cranleigh Abu Dhabi on Saadiyat, the British School Al Khubairat, Brighton College Abu Dhabi, Repton Abu Dhabi, the Aldar Academies network, Aldar International School and the American Community School. Capacity is broadly good outside the top three British names, with most families placing within a single term.

Fees and value for money

ESF is the affordable bench at HKD 93,000 to HKD 203,000 (USD 12,000 to USD 26,000). Premium British and American schools publish HKD 220,000 to HKD 320,000 (USD 28,000 to USD 41,000) plus a non-refundable capital levy of HKD 38,000 at ESF or much higher at top private schools.

Abu Dhabi is materially cheaper. ADEK-approved 2026 tuition puts Year 7 to 11 fees between AED 45,000 and AED 100,000 (USD 12,000 to USD 27,000) at premium British schools, and AED 60,000 to AED 110,000 at IB Diploma. ADEK regulates annual increases against inspection ratings, which is unique parental protection. Use the cost calculator to model both.

Curriculum availability

Hong Kong is British and IB heavy with a strong American bench at HKIS. Abu Dhabi tilts British and IB by school count, with growing American options at ACS Abu Dhabi and an Indian CBSE pathway for the large South Asian community. The IB Diploma is the safest portable credential in either city. For curriculum deep dives see the British curriculum hub.

Neighbourhoods families pick

In Hong Kong, families cluster around the Mid-Levels and Pok Fu Lam for ESF, Repulse Bay and Stanley for HKIS, Discovery Bay and Tung Chung for the discounted commuter option, and Sai Kung or Clear Water Bay for the family-friendly New Territories. A three-bedroom apartment in central catchments runs HKD 55,000 to HKD 110,000 per month.

In Abu Dhabi, families cluster on Saadiyat Island for Cranleigh, Al Reem Island for Repton and Brighton, Khalifa City for Aldar Academies, and Al Mushrif for BSAK. A four-bedroom villa on Saadiyat runs AED 15,000 to AED 28,000 per month with garden and beach access; a comparable Hong Kong footprint is impossible at any reasonable price.

Lifestyle and climate

Hong Kong is humid and dense, with hot wet summers and mild winters. Family life is shaped by hiking trails, harbour weekends and the world's busiest airport for short Asian travel. Abu Dhabi is hot and dry for eight months with summer peaks above 45 degrees Celsius, and a glorious October to April window for outdoor sport, beach and desert weekends. Abu Dhabi is materially safer in survey data and has dramatically more outdoor space for children.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose Hong Kong if your role demands it, your employer underwrites school fees and your child thrives in an academically intense environment with global brand schools. Choose Abu Dhabi if you want maximum space for your money, lower fees, a sun-and-beach family life and a faster, friendlier visa regime. The five year delta usually lands at USD 80,000 to USD 150,000 per child in Abu Dhabi's favour at comparable tier schools.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hong Kong or Abu Dhabi cheaper for international school families in 2026?

Abu Dhabi is meaningfully cheaper. School fees are roughly 30 to 50 percent lower at comparable tier, housing is dramatically larger for the money and there is no income tax to chip away at salary.

Which city has better international schools?
