London is the world's deepest English-medium school market by quality and the most expensive at the very top. Mumbai is the smaller but fast-maturing market with premium IB and IGCSE schools at a fraction of London prices. Both cities run mature provision from age 3 to 18; the gap is not in quality at the top, it is in price and what the rest of family life costs around the school day.

Schools landscape side by side

London families shortlist senior independents such as Westminster, St Paul's Girls, North London Collegiate and King's College School Wimbledon, plus international IB schools such as ACS International, Southbank International, the International School of London and TASIS England. The American School in London is the dominant American option. Capacity varies sharply by year group: 11+ and 13+ entry are the toughest, and most senior independents publish their offer rates and waiting list policy openly.

Mumbai families pick Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Oberoi International, Aditya Birla World Academy, the American School of Bombay, Ecole Mondiale World School and JBCN International. The IB Diploma cohort at Dhirubhai and the American School of Bombay is small but academically strong. Newer premium schools in Bandra Kurla Complex and Worli have absorbed most of the recent demand growth.

Fees and value for money

London is the most expensive market in this comparison. Senior independents charge GBP 25,000 to 35,000 a year for day pupils and GBP 45,000 to 50,000 for boarders. American and IB international schools sit at GBP 28,000 to 45,000 a year for secondary. State schools are free and academically strong if you live inside the catchment of an Ofsted Outstanding school.

Mumbai is materially cheaper. Premium IB and IGCSE schools charge INR 12 to 22 lakh a year for secondary (roughly USD 14,000 to 26,000), plus a one-time admission fee and refundable security deposit. Mid-tier IB schools sit at INR 7 to 12 lakh. Use the cost calculator for an all-in number including housing and transport.

Curriculum availability

London is overwhelmingly British, with deep IB provision at Southbank International, the International School of London and a growing number of independents. Mumbai is IB, IGCSE and CBSE heavy with strong A Level pathways at premium schools. Both cities deliver excellent IB Diploma outcomes when the cohort is selective.

See the British curriculum hub for GCSE and A Level detail and the IB hub for global portability.

Neighbourhoods families pick

London catchments matter. Families pick St John's Wood and Hampstead for the American School in London and the International School of London, Wimbledon and Kingston for KCS Wimbledon and ACS Cobham commutes, Notting Hill and Holland Park for state and independent prep options, and Greenwich and Blackheath for affordable space with strong schools. A four-bedroom house in Wimbledon runs GBP 5,500 to 9,500 per month.

Mumbai families cluster in Bandra West, Bandra Kurla Complex, Worli, Lower Parel and Powai. A three-bedroom apartment in Bandra West runs INR 3 to 6 lakh per month (roughly USD 3,600 to 7,200), with the school-bus network covering most of the south-central catchment.

Lifestyle and climate

London is a mature European capital with four seasons, world-class culture and an unmatched depth of children's activities. Air quality has improved since the 2023 ULEZ expansion. Mumbai is hot, humid, monsoon-heavy from June to September, and dense in a way that some children love and others struggle with. Mumbai wins on price, food and the warmth of family network life; London wins on safety, public health care, and the breadth of weekend options reachable by train.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose London if you want the deepest English-medium school market in the world, a four-season European life and a passport-strong city for university applications. Plan a generous fees budget or move into a strong state catchment instead.

Choose Mumbai if you want a premium IB education at a third of London prices, a fast-growing commercial environment and a family network advantage if you have South Asian heritage. It also suits families wanting a deeper India posting that pays for itself.

Run both through the cost calculator. For two children at premium schools, the five year all-in saving in Mumbai versus London is typically USD 250,000 to 400,000.
