Mumbai is the cheaper, lower-tax landing pad with a small but elite cluster of internationally-minded schools. Madrid offers a richer European school market, the Schengen passport calendar and better air quality, at materially higher fees. Both run English-medium curricula but the rhythm of family life is worlds apart.

Schools landscape side by side

Madrid has a deep international school bench. The names families recognise include Runnymede College, King's College Madrid, the British Council School, the American School of Madrid, ICS Madrid (IB), Hastings School and St George's School Madrid. Spanish bilingual options such as Colegio Estudio and SEK International School blend in Spanish, English and the IB. Most schools offer Years 1 to 13 in English with strong universities placement to the UK, US and Spain. See our Madrid schools hub for the depth.

Mumbai is concentrated. The internationally focused names are Dhirubhai Ambani International School (DAIS), American School of Bombay (ASB), Bombay International School, BD Somani International, JBCN International and Oberoi International. DAIS is consistently ranked India's top IB day school, and ASB is the only fully American-curriculum school in the city. Demand is high for Grade 1, Grade 6 and Grade 11 places.

Fees and value for money

Madrid sits in the moderate band for European capitals. Premium schools (Runnymede, King's, American School) publish secondary fees of EUR 18,000 to EUR 28,000. Mid-tier bilingual schools run EUR 8,000 to EUR 14,000, which is excellent value for the quality of provision. Capital levies are usually EUR 1,000 to EUR 3,000 one-off, and annual increases are capped near inflation.

Mumbai is the bargain on paper. DAIS publishes a steep premium for India at roughly INR 12 lakh to INR 20 lakh (USD 14,000 to USD 24,000) for IB Diploma years. American School of Bombay runs higher at USD 26,000 to USD 32,000 for IB and US Diploma streams, broadly comparable to Madrid premiums. Mid-tier IB schools such as JBCN and Oberoi sit at INR 7 lakh to INR 10 lakh (USD 8,500 to USD 12,000). Model your shortlist with the cost calculator.

Curriculum availability

Madrid has the widest curriculum diversity in the Spanish-speaking world. Pure British (King's, Runnymede), pure American (ASM), IB Diploma in English (ICS, SEK) and Spanish bilingual with IB on top are all available. Children placed in Spanish bilingual streams typically reach native fluency by Year 4, a meaningful long-term asset. Read our British curriculum guide for portability notes.

Mumbai is dominated by IB and IGCSE in the international segment. ASB offers a US Diploma plus IB pathway. Indian boards (ICSE, CBSE) sit alongside but are not designed for relocating families and rarely transfer cleanly outside India.

Neighbourhoods families pick

In Madrid, expat families with school-age children cluster in the northwest suburbs: Pozuelo de Alarcon, Aravaca, La Moraleja (for La Moraleja's schools and the American School), Boadilla del Monte and Las Rozas. Apartments in town suit early years and primary; villas with gardens become realistic from Pozuelo outward. A four-bedroom villa rents for EUR 2,800 to EUR 5,500 per month depending on location.

In Mumbai, families pick Bandra West (close to DAIS and ASB shuttle routes), Worli and Lower Parel (sea views, ASB walking distance), Powai (for Oberoi International and easier traffic) and Juhu for beachside living. A serviced three-bedroom flat in Bandra or Worli runs INR 350,000 to INR 700,000 per month, with security and staff included in many leases.

Lifestyle and climate

Madrid has a continental Mediterranean climate with cold dry winters, beautiful springs and hot dry summers up to 38 degrees Celsius in July and August. The food scene is unmatched in Iberia, healthcare is excellent on both public and private routes, and pace of life is famously unhurried. Schengen makes weekend trips frictionless.

Mumbai is hot and humid with a defined monsoon from June to September that floods parts of the city annually. Air quality has improved but remains a real concern in winter. The trade-off is genuine warmth, dense expat community, full-time household help that frees both parents to work, and a remarkable cultural offer. Travel within India is straightforward and inexpensive.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose Madrid if you want a European base, Spanish-language exposure for your children, predictable air quality and proximity to the UK, France and Portugal. It also suits families using the Spain Digital Nomad visa or non-lucrative residency.

Choose Mumbai if your employer covers a premium IB school and you want to give your children deep India exposure with substantial domestic help making the day work. It is the harder city to land in but the most rewarding once routines settle. See also Dubai vs Mumbai for the Gulf alternative.

Frequently asked questions

Is Madrid or Mumbai cheaper for international school families in 2026?

Mumbai is cheaper on housing, transport, food and household help. Premium IB tuition at DAIS and ASB is comparable to Madrid, but mid-tier IB schools in Mumbai run 30 to 50 percent below Madrid equivalents.

Which city has better international schools?

Madrid has more depth across British, American and IB streams. Mumbai has a narrower bench but DAIS and ASB are world-class. Fit depends on curriculum and budget, not headline rankings.

Is the family visa easier in Madrid or Mumbai?

Madrid is more flexible thanks to multiple residency routes including non-lucrative, digital nomad and standard work visas. Mumbai requires employer sponsorship through India's employment visa system.

How is air quality in each city?

Madrid has good to moderate air quality year round. Mumbai's air worsens noticeably from November to February. Many international school families with respiratory issues prefer Madrid for that reason.

Where do most international school families live in each city?

In Madrid, the northwest suburbs Pozuelo, Aravaca and La Moraleja dominate. In Mumbai, Bandra West, Worli, Powai and Juhu are the family-heavy zones close to the top schools.
