Singapore is the more academically prestigious, safer and more expensive city. Riyadh is the financially advantaged, fast-changing posting where compensation packages typically still cover schooling in full. Both have mature English-medium international schools from age 3 to 18.

Schools landscape side by side

Singapore's shortlist is famous: UWCSEA (Dover and East), Tanglin Trust, Singapore American School (SAS), Dulwich College Singapore, Stamford American International, Canadian International and the Australian International School. The Tier 1 names run 6 to 18 month waiting lists for Years 1, 7 and 12. The IB Diploma dominates the senior years. See our Singapore schools hub for fees and ratings.

Riyadh has expanded sharply since 2020. Established names include the British International School Riyadh (BISR), American International School Riyadh (AIS-R), King Faisal School, Multinational School Riyadh and SEK International. Newer entrants include King's Schools Riyadh, Misk Schools and several Vision 2030-aligned premium schools. Demand is healthy but waiting lists are shorter than Singapore at most entry points.

Fees and value for money

Singapore is one of the world's most expensive school markets. UWCSEA, Tanglin and SAS publish secondary fees of SGD 38,000 to SGD 56,000 (USD 28,000 to USD 42,000) plus a refundable building levy. Annual increases run 4 to 7 percent and there is no fee cap.

Riyadh runs around 40 percent cheaper at premium and 50 percent cheaper at mid-tier. AIS-R publishes secondary fees of SAR 95,000 to SAR 110,000 (USD 25,000 to USD 29,000); BISR runs SAR 75,000 to SAR 95,000. Senior corporate, defence and aramco-linked packages often still include school allowances covering the full bill. Model both with the cost calculator.

Curriculum availability

Singapore is IB-heavy at the top, with American and British provision at SAS, Tanglin and Dulwich. UWCSEA runs the world's largest IB Diploma cohort. Read our IB hub for the curriculum landscape.

Riyadh has grown its IB and British provision sharply since 2022. AIS-R offers a US Diploma plus IB option; BISR runs IGCSE and A Level. Saudi national curriculum schools serving expats include Manarat schools and KAS-aligned programmes with English instruction. Fluent Arabic is no longer essential at most premium schools.

Neighbourhoods families pick

In Singapore, school catchments matter. Bukit Timah and Sixth Avenue serve Tanglin and Dover Court. East Coast around Tampines serves UWCSEA East, OFS and Tanjong Katong. Holland Village and Dempsey serve Stamford American. Woodlands serves SAS. A three-bedroom condo in central catchments runs SGD 8,000 to SGD 14,000 per month.

In Riyadh, families cluster in the Diplomatic Quarter (DQ), Hittin, Al Yasmin and Al Aqiq for AIS-R proximity, and Al Sahafa, Al Mughrizat and King Abdullah Financial District compounds for BISR. A four-bedroom compound villa runs SAR 200,000 to SAR 400,000 annually, often with pool, gym and security included.

Lifestyle and climate

Singapore is hot and humid year round at 27 to 32 degrees Celsius with daily afternoon storms. Safety, public transport and healthcare are world-class. Travel within Southeast Asia is cheap and easy.

Riyadh is hot and dry with summer peaks above 45 degrees Celsius. Reforms since 2017 have transformed cultural life: cinemas, concerts, mixed-gender restaurants and a growing arts scene under Diriyah Gate, Boulevard Riyadh City and the Riyadh Season events. Female driving has been normal since 2018. Compound life remains the standard expat experience.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose Singapore if academic prestige, safety and a calm rhythm matter most, and your package can carry the premium. It is the stronger city for IB Diploma students aiming at competitive US and UK universities.

Choose Riyadh if your role taps the Vision 2030 wave and the compensation package covers schooling. It rewards families willing to engage with a fast-changing society and prefer compound living. See our Dubai vs Riyadh piece for the Gulf alternative.
