Zurich and Jakarta sit at opposite ends of the international schooling spectrum. Use the table above to anchor your shortlist, then read on for the texture beneath each row.

Schools landscape side by side

Zurich is regulated by Cantonal education authorities with International Baccalaureate Organization or Council of British International Schools accreditation, with around 20 international and bilingual schools that publish international curricula across the north shore of Lake Zurich and the Adliswil corridor. The schools families most often shortlist are Zurich International School, Inter-Community School Zurich, the SIS Swiss International School network and the International School of Central Switzerland. Zurich families tend to apply 9 to 12 months ahead of the academic year for premium places.

Jakarta's market is regulated by Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture with SPK licensing for foreign-curriculum schools, with around 30 SPK-licensed international schools across the southern corridor through Pondok Indah, Cilandak and Bintaro. The premium tier families talk about includes Jakarta Intercultural School, British School Jakarta, Jakarta Japanese School, Australian Independent School and the German School Jakarta (DSJ). Use our compare tool to put three schools side by side, then ask each one for last year's IB Diploma or A Level results in writing.

Both cities publish inspection or accreditation data that lets parents validate a brand before they visit. See our Zurich city hub and Jakarta city hub for full school directories and catchment notes.

Fees and value for money

Annual primary tuition in Zurich runs USD 36,000 to 42,000 (CHF 33,000 to 38,000), with secondary at USD 45,000 to 53,000 (CHF 41,000 to 47,000). In Jakarta, primary tuition runs USD 5,000 to 28,000 (IDR 80,000,000 to 450,000,000), with secondary at USD 10,000 to 35,000 (IDR 160,000,000 to 550,000,000). Premium IB and British schools sit at the top of each range, and capital levies, transport and lunches add 15 to 25 percent on top of headline tuition in both cities.

For an all-in load including transport and capital levies see our Zurich fees guide and Jakarta fees guide. Model a five year per child total in the cost calculator before you commit.

Curriculum availability

Zurich covers Swiss bilingual immersion, IB, American high school diploma with AP and the British IGCSE and A Level pathway, while Jakarta covers British IGCSE and A Level, the full IB continuum, the Australian curriculum and Singaporean primary. The IB Diploma is the safest portable credential in either city for families who may move again within five years. For curriculum specific deep dives see our IB hub, British curriculum hub and American curriculum hub.

Neighbourhoods families pick

In Zurich, international school families cluster in Kusnacht, Zollikon, Erlenbach, Adliswil, Wallisellen and the city's wider Goldkuste suburbs. Expect rents of CHF 5,500 to 9,500 (USD 6,000 to 10,400) per month for a four bedroom house in Kusnacht or Erlenbach, with school-bus routes from these catchments to the major school clusters. In Jakarta, the equivalent catchments are Pondok Indah, Kemang, Cilandak, Bintaro and the Sentul gated communities, where rents sit at IDR 35,000,000 to 90,000,000 (USD 2,200 to 5,600) per month for a four bedroom villa in Pondok Indah or a serviced apartment in Kemang. Plan around the school first and the postcode second; commute times in both cities can be brutal in rush hour.

Lifestyle and climate

Zurich: Cool temperate with mild summers around 22 degrees Celsius and cold winters dipping below zero with snow. German is the working language outside the international school bubble; English carries international schools and most multinational employers. Daily life leans on Alpine weekends, lake life in summer, structured family clubs and easy reach into the rest of Europe by train.

Jakarta: Tropical with humid temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius year round and a defined wet season from November to April. Bahasa Indonesia is helpful for daily life; English carries international schools, expat services and most multinational employers. Daily life leans on compound family life, weekend escapes to Bali and the islands, household help included in most packages. Climate and working language tend to be the deciding factors once cost and curriculum are roughly equal.

Verdict: who picks which city

Pick Zurich when

Pick Zurich if salary and stability matter, you value EU-quality healthcare and university routes, and your children will benefit from Swiss bilingual immersion. The premium is real, but so is the quality of life.

Pick Jakarta when

Pick Jakarta if your employer is funding the move and you want a tropical family base with strong IB and British provision at a fraction of Swiss prices. The five year all-in delta is usually USD 250,000 to 400,000 in Jakarta's favour.

Most families run both cities through the cost calculator before they commit, and use the school finder to shortlist three concrete options at each end before booking visits.

Frequently asked questions

Is Jakarta really that much cheaper than Zurich for international families?

Yes by a wide margin. Cost of living indices place Zurich around three times Jakarta for a family of four, and Swiss tuition runs four to six times Indonesian fees at the equivalent tier. Even premium JIS or BSJ cost less than mid-tier ZIS.

Which city has stronger international school choice?

Jakarta has the larger SPK cluster with around 30 schools; Zurich has a smaller market but the established names like ZIS and ICS Zurich deliver some of the strongest IB Diploma results in Europe.

Will my children pick up German or Bahasa at school?

Children in Zurich's bilingual SIS network become functionally fluent in German within three years. Jakarta children rarely use Bahasa outside the classroom because English carries the expat ecosystem, but they pick up survival Indonesian quickly.

Which city is easier on the trailing spouse?

Zurich is easier for spouses with EU passports and German, while Jakarta is easier for English-speaking spouses given the deep expat services market, household help and active remote-work community.
